Leading with Purpose in July: Honoring Independence, Legacy, Ability, Emerging Leaders and Outdoor Spaces

As summer reaches its peak, July marks a time to celebrate the values and voices that shape our communities and our country. It is a month rooted in reflection—on individual identity, shared spaces, civic foundations, and the promise of generations to come.

As we celebrate Independence Day, we revisit the ideals that formed the foundation of American democracy. The vision of the Founding Fathers was one of possibility and responsibility—principles that have been debated, reimagined, and expanded over time. In honoring their legacy, we also recognize the ways civic engagement is being shaped by today’s youth. Their energy, perspective, and commitment ensure that the democratic experiment continues to evolve with purpose and integrity. In the days ahead, we will be profiling each of the Founder Fathers, following July 4th and leading up to GlobalMindED’s June 2026 event, Dimensions of Our Democracy.

Throughout July, we will share the voices of GlobalMindED students—first-generation college students, aspiring professionals, and future change makers. Their journeys reflect resilience, ambition, and the critical role of access to education and opportunity. These students remind us that leadership does not begin at the top, but at every stage of the journey, often with courage born from navigating the unknown.

Disability Month honors the lives and leadership of people living with disabilities. It is a celebration of strength, creativity, and the ongoing work of removing barriers—physical, societal, emotional and attitudinal. Through personal stories, advocacy, and innovation, individuals continue to expand the narrative of what it means to live fully and lead boldly. Their contributions enrich our institutions, industries, and communities. At our recent conference, we heard from the leaders like Lloyd Lewis of ARC whose own journey with his son, Kennedy, called him to larger work lifting up citizens with Down syndrome.

July is also Parks and Recreation Month! We all benefit from open spaces and local places of interest and inspiration. Parks and recreation centers are more than amenities—they are gathering spaces that foster well-being, belonging, and stewardship. They offer children places to play, families places to connect, and all of us opportunities to move, breathe, and reflect with each other and often, our four-legged heart beats. We celebrate the unsung heroes who maintain these spaces and the communities who bring them to life.

Together, the themes of July—foundations of our democracy, public service, civic responsibility, ability status for all and emerging leadership—illustrate how individual stories can shape collective progress. This month, we celebrate the people and principles that move us forward in the best possible way.
