League of Women Voters Illinois Statement Regarding Immigration Policy
CHICAGO, IL- June 27, 2018
The League of Women Voters of Illinois believes immigration policy should:
  • promote reunification of immediate families
  • be responsive to those facing political persecution or humanitarian crises
  • ensure fair treatment under the law
  • support provisions for unauthorized immigrants to earn legal status.
The administration's "zero tolerance" policy does not approach this standard. Instead it has resulted in inhumane treatment of immigrants and asylum-seekers by tearing families apart, inflicting permanent damage on children, subjecting people to illegal detention in inhuman conditions, and demonizing entire communities.
In addition to the recent cruelty at the border, the policy is affecting countless immigrants in Illinois who suffer constant fear that family members will be arrested and deported without warning.
The National League of Women Voters has alerted legislators that the "zero tolerance" policy is failing to advance our country's immigration system.
The Illinois League is calling on Governor Rauner to denounce the "zero tolerance" policy and to:
  • withdraw the offer of National guard support
  • investigate the legality of ICE raids in Illinois
  • sign recently-passed legislation that supports immigrants in Illinois.
In addition, League members who are convening in Chicago will join the protest in Daley Plaza from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm on June 30th.
