For the first time, I logged onto the www.vote411.org website and was impressed by how slick it works.  During a contested election it will be a simple one-stop site for voters to use in gathering information about candidates when we don't have as much time as we like to complete an in depth study of all the races.  Please check it out and spread the word on its availability.

The League of Women Voters of the La Crosse Area is trying something new for its members!  Members think it would be stimulating to have a book club that focuses on issues that are reflective of the positions and values of the League - read more about it in the newsletter.  My recommendation for a book is The New Jim Crow-Mass Incarceration in the Age of Color Blindness by Michelle Alexander.  It is a very informative book.

As always, the program committee is working hard to bring relevant speakers and topics to the membership.  There will be a get-together in August to get us back into the swing of programs. In September we will hear about the changes in the voting laws and what we need to do to ready individuals to get out and vote.  Details are enclosed in the newsletter.

I hope you are having a great summer!

BOOK:            "The Boom:  How Fracking Ignited the                                      American Energy Revolution and Changed                                the World" by Russell Gold

Some of us thought it would be fun to read a book dealing with issues that we have talked about in League.  We can meet as often or as little as anybody wants to, but we thought maybe 2-3 times a year, during the winter when it might be nice to get together.  I set up the first book and the first meeting and hope you can come.  If you can't come this time but you have a book that you would like to suggest, please let me know.  You can find the book for less than $10.00 used on Amazon.

A review of the book says as follows:  Russell Gold is a reporter for the Wall Street Journal and has spent a decade reporting on some of the biggest stories.  He was recognized as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and a recipient of the Gerald Loeb Award for his work.  He conducted thousands of interviews with engineers, CEOs, environmentalists, politicians, etc.  The result is an essential book - a commanding piece of journalism, an astonishing story of human ingenuity, and an epic work of storytelling.

Welcome New Board Members

Kathy Mulliner is a retired educator.  She worked 24 years in the School District of Holmen, most of the time as the Pupil Services Coordinator for the District.  Kathy is spending her time volunteering, traveling, reading, gardening and researching family history.  Kathy has been a member of the LWV for nine years and is excited about the opportunity to serve on the League's board.

Deb Lutjen: "As a new member of the La Crosse LWV and a new member of the board, I look forward to learning more about the contribution of the LWV in providing education and advocacy opportunities for citizen involvement in public policy.  By joining the board, I expect to gain a better understanding of the local issues and efforts to involve citizens in our local government. Through my work each day at World Services of La Crosse, we promote the principles of citizen involvement in emerging democracies.  I anticipate that the non-partisan LWV will be an opportunity for responsible citizenship to stay informed about our government and work with like-minded citizens to make Western Wisconsin a good place to live."

Mary Nugent:  "I am very excited to represent the LWV as a board member. I have been married for 40 years to a wonderful man and small business owner.  We have three sons, two daughter-in-laws, and two grandchildren, all of whom I am very proud. While I am retired now, I taught for 35 years in a variety of roles and grade levels: reading, language arts, remediation, English as a Second Language, and Gifted and Talented.  During my time in education, I was active in my teacher's union, serving as an officer and as Teacher's Rights Chairperson, a role which I loved. I found great satisfaction in advocating for teachers using the grievance process as outlined in our contract.  The League of Women Voters has been advocating for voter rights for close to 100 years and I am proud to be a part of that important mission. I look forward to meeting all of you."

worker as well as volunteer possibilities at the polls.

RSVP to Dee Peacock at [email protected] before September 5.
