During the winter season, HopePHL provides basic needs like hats, scarves, and gloves to keep children and youth safe from the impact of the cold weather. We also help families maintain the security of another necessity: housing.
Recently, Raya (name changed for privacy) contacted HopePHL and requested help through our homelessness prevention and diversion program.
After her work schedule was cut back at a local restaurant, she fell four months behind on her rent. She and her three-year-old son Jamal (name changed for privacy) were facing eviction. With no family support to fall back on, Raya was faced with the prospect of hoping for space in one of the family temporary housing programs.
An eviction would also negatively impact her credit history and ability to obtain a lease in the future. Raya was able to find a position with more hours and better pay, but feared it was too late to preserve the stability she had worked so hard for since her son was born.
Then, she talked to staff at HopePHL about the homelessness prevention and diversion program. Working quickly, HopePHL’s team reached out to the property owner to see what was needed to stop the eviction process. Raya was approved for four months in back rent and the eviction was halted. “I cried every night when I thought we’d be put out. Thank you to everyone who helps HopePHL -- they sure helped me and my son.”
At HopePHL, we are beyond grateful for the support of people like you. Your support, in turn, helps us to support our families when they need it most.

Everyday Learning Play Spaces Completes Another Project!
|
|
|
|
We are excited to announce the completion of the Child Friendly Spaces for Everyday Learning Play Spaces at Darlene Morris Love & Care, an emergency housing program in West Philadelphia.
The room was designed based on ideas and feedback from families and staff at the program and utilized Trauma Informed Design practices. The space was created for young children to encourage play between children and caregivers, designed for one to two families with young children to use at a time. The play space has different zones for story-time, tummy time for infants and toddlers, spaces to color, write, and draw, puzzles, kitchen set with dining table and dramatic play area with costumes.
We are currently working on an interactive mural for the adjoining space to finish a playful learning and child friendly wing at Darlene’s program!

Aleka Anderson, a junior at St. Joe’s University, initially became interested in getting more involved in helping her community after a class she took at St. Joes that required her to visit a local school each week to support the children in their classroom. After this class she was inspired to search online for local volunteer opportunities, and she stumbled across the Birthday Giving Program. She said that she loves her birthday and even considers it her favorite “holiday” and she believes everyone should be made to feel special on their birthdays, no matter their circumstances.
For anyone considering searching for opportunities that serve their community, the advice Aleka has is simple: “find something you’re passionate about and you will enjoy the work so much.” Currently, The Birthday Giving Program serves over 130 nonprofits across 41 states (including the District of Columbia) and supports thousands of people facing adversity in their lives.
She began in July, donating 30 bags her first month and since has continued to put together and drop off five bags each month for kids between the ages of eight and 12. They are shared with HopePHL programs such as Family Empowerment Service, Parenting Collaborative, and Truancy Intervention and Prevention Services.
