Hunters Woods Renovation Kicks-off with a Community Celebration!
Fellowship Square kicked-off its 60 th  year of providing affordable housing to low-income seniors with a $12 million renovation to its Hunters Woods Fellowship House, launched on February 27 at a reception and ceremonial groundbreaking.

Built in 1979, the 225-unit property provides affordable housing to 300+ residents aged 62 and older who live on extremely limited fixed incomes of approximately $12,000/year. The renovation will happen synonymously with Fellowship Square’s ongoing redevelopment of its Lake Anne Fellowship House , an $84 million project that includes the construction of a new 240-apartment building that replaces the existing property. That project is expected to be completed in 2022, the $12 million Hunters Woods project in 2023.

Major improvements to the 225-unit Hunters Woods Fellowship House will include:
  • reconfiguring 12 apartments into accessible units for residents with disabilities or mobility issues
  • new flooring, finishes and lighting throughout building
  • roof replacement; improving building energy efficiency
  • modernizing the heating/cooling system
  • updating building exterior and landscaping
  • new entrance and lobby area with indoor/outdoor seating

The refinancing, with a U.S. Federal Housing Administration loan guaranteed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), enables Fellowship Square to not only preserve and improve Hunters Woods, but to also have access to funds to invest in future projects - including the potential addition of new affordable housing properties in the years ahead.

If I'd Known I Was Going to Live This Long
Christy Zeitz headshot
We all hope to live long prosperous lives. We plan for the future – saving money, eating healthy and exercising (or at least trying to), considering our options at every stage of life.

Sometimes life throws us curve balls and we may not end up where we thought we would. For Fellowship Square residents, they have lived with the hand that was dealt to them and are thankful that they’ve found a safe and comfortable place to call home. While their spirits may be bright, they don’t always feel prepared for what comes next.

Fortunately, Fellowship Square is an organization that welcomes them and values them as members of our community. We lift them up – empower them – to live their best life, no matter their age or ability. We work tirelessly to provide the best home for them and encourage them to have a say in their surroundings – the building they live in, the programs and services they need, and the fun activities that make life worth living.

As we embark on a $12 million renovation at Hunters Woods Fellowship House, the residents there have had a voice in this process. They are key stakeholders in this process and their input is an important part of our success.

You never know where life will take you. Even with the best plans and best intentions, you don’t always end up where you thought you would be. At Fellowship Square, we’re proud to provide the stability and support that help older adults navigate the transitions that are sure to come, especially for those with limited means to afford life’s necessities – like housing.

I hope you will join us as we celebrate our  60 th  Anniversary  this year by volunteering at one of our Fellowship Square properties; or by attending one of our many events; or by making a generous donation to help us provide programs and services for residents and to cover emergency expenses that they are unable to pay for themselves.

Live long and prosper so long as you’re able.
With gratitude,

New Board Member Tom Van Lierde
Thomas headshot
Tom VanLierde  has lived in the Washington DC/Metro Area for over 50 years. He earned his Degree in Finance and Economics from The Catholic University of America in Washington DC where he was a Division I scholarship track athlete.  His primary focus has been banking, but he also gained valuable experience by working in the real estate development world and the Federal Government space (GSA – Federal Property Resources Service). Tom has more than 35 years of comprehensive experience in managing, structuring, and closing commercial and residential real estate loans and settling debts in favor of lending institutions, in particular, highly structured commercial loans, as well as asset management.

Tom has given time to supporting various organizations that serve the community and has a keen interest in the wellbeing of older adults. He believes that senior housing is a special niche that is not just a commercial business enterprise, but one that truly provides the necessary foundation for seniors and the disabled to live good lives and thrive. He hopes to bring and share his experience with Fellowship Square and the FS Board of Directors.
