A Guide to Color Systems and the Best One For Promotional Products
Greetings!
RGB vs. CMYK vs. PMS: A Color Showdown
These three color systems might seem interchangeable, but each plays a specific role in the world of visuals. Let's break down their similarities, differences, and their common applications.

The Three Major Color Systems

  • RGB (Red, Green, Blue): This is an Additive model, it uses light emitted by individual pixels to create colors. It’s most commonly used for digital displays like TVs, monitors, and smartphones.

  • CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black): This is known as a Subtractive model, it uses inks that absorb specific wavelengths of light to create colors. It’s used in printing applications like brochures, magazines, and packaging.

  • PMS (Pantone Matching System): This is a standardized numbering system for creating specific ink mixtures, ensuring consistent color reproduction across different printing processes.
It is the preferred color model for branding applications like logos,
packaging, and marketing materials where precise color matching
is crucial. This is the standard for the promotional products industry.
Color Range of the Three Systems

  • RGB: Offers the widest range of colors due to its additive nature. Combining all three colors at full intensity creates white, while their absence results in black.
  • CMYK: Has a more limited range compared to RGB as inks can't perfectly absorb all wavelengths. Combining all inks creates a muddy brown instead of true black (just like your first grade watercolor paint set) hence the addition of black ink.
  • PMS: Offers a vast library of specific pre-mixed colors, ensuring consistency but not as flexible as creating custom colors in RGB or CMYK. Most businesses ordering promotional products will have had their logo created by a design team who will specify the PMS colors of the logo.

A Cautionary Tale

We once had a well-known Boston law firm that paid a lot of money (I mean a lot!) to a design firm to create a new color for the firm as well as a new font. Neither the color nor the font could be reproduced for the firm's promotional needs as neither was standardized.

Applications

  • RGB: Ideal for web design, animation, video games, digital presentations, and any other applications where colors are displayed on screens.
  • CMYK: Used for brochures, magazines, newspapers, flyers, posters, and other printed materials.
  • PMS: Best for branding materials like logos, packaging, signage, and any situation where color accuracy and consistency are paramount.

Converting Between Color Systems

  • Converting between RGB and CMYK can be challenging and may not always produce the exact desired color due to the distinct color palettes.
  • PMS colors can be approximated in RGB or CMYK, but perfect matches are not always possible.
  • If you are imprinting a promotional product it is best to know and use your PMS colors. If you send us RGB or CMYK values we can use conversion tools to approximate the PMS color, but they often generate a range of possible PMS matches and not an exact match. Always best to have your PMS colors.

One Last Note

HEX: While not a color type, HEX codes are a shorthand way to represent colors in RGB for web and design applications. It is not used in the promotional products industry.

In essence, understanding the strengths and limitations of each color system will help you choose the right one for your specific needs. When it comes to digital displays, RGB reigns supreme. For physical printing, CMYK is the go-to option. And for precise color matching and branding promotional products, PMS takes the crown.
