                         May 2017
WELCOME to Learn, Innovate, Excel!  Our goal with this newsletter is to provide useful information and tips that will help you save time, be more productive, and also reduce risk. This information complements our SE University program, by introducing you to tips on a wide variety of topics affecting structural engineers.

If you have any tips you would like to share as part of a future Learn, Innovate, Excel newsletter, please email Lisa Willard or Brian Quinn
IN THIS ISSUE...

Learn1 HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL MASONRY MOVEMENT JOINTS

When designing with structural masonry and/or architectural brick veneer, are you certain you are following the best practices in regards to control or expansion joint placement in your design? Are you appropriately noting these movement joints on drawings and explaining in the specification to ensure the mason will follow your directions to prevent unnecessary cracks or failure? With so many different materials being used in construction and architectural veneer, it might be a good idea to refresh the basics of control joint placement before your next masonry building project ...  read the full article and access these useful resources at our SE University blog.

Learn2 USEFUL RESOURCES FOR MASONRY JOINT DESIGN

Are you aware of the many resources that are available for free to assist structural engineers in the design and detailing of masonry? Sometimes, engineers are so busy meeting deadlines that they don't have the time to peruse the many resources that could save time and reduce errors, especially when detailing masonry movement joints. ..  read the full article on our SE University blog.

InspireSEU SPEAKER INSPIRES ORGANIZATIONS:
FRIENDS OF BLUE MOUND STATE PARK AND
THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF LOUDOUN COUNTY

SE University began the SEU Speaker Inspires program in 2015 as a way to "pay it forward," enabling our speakers to designate a charity/organization of their choice for SE University to make a donation to help improve our world. To learn more about the organizations that SE University speakers have chosen, please read our SEU Speaker Inspires Blog Posts.

Pat Conway, AIA International Masonry Institute
In March 2017, Pat Conway, AIA, from the International Masonry Institute, presented Masonry Movement Joints from a Structural and Architectural Perspective . He nominated Friends of Blue Mound State Park ( http://fwspbluemound.blogspot.com/ ) for the SEU Speaker Inspires donation of the month.

Friends of Blue Mound State Park is a group of volunteers working together to benefit the park by enhancing and preserving its natural resources while offering activities and projects to improve the park guest's visit. Pat shared that he chose Friends of Blue Mound State Park because they "help support our K-5th grade Youth Cross-Country Ski Program to introduce children and families to a winter sport as a part of a fun, active, outdoor Nordic lifestyle. This ski program is run by the Blue Mound Nordic Ski Club and offers ski lessons and games on Saturday mornings in January and February. We rent ski equipment to families and offer scholarships to those who cannot afford it."

Lori Koch, PE
American Wood Council
In April 2017, Lori Koch, PE, from the American Wood Council, presented 2015 National Design Specification for Wood Construction - Significant Changes including Cross-laminated Timber. She nominated the Humane Society of Loudoun County ( http://www.humaneloudoun.org/) for the SEU Speaker Inspires donation of the month.

Lori shared why she chose the Humane Society: "I have always loved animals, and have gained several 4 legged family members from local shelters over my life. Adopting an animal from a shelter is one of the greatest gifts you can ever give yourself, although in my experience cats will never be satisfied with your work even if you provide them engineering drawings in advance for their cat tree construction project."

Thank you, Pat and Lori, for helping structural engineers with your SE University sessions, and for your designations of the Friends of Blue Mound State Park and the Humane Society of Loudoun County  as SEU Speaker Inspires  Organizations!
