                         July 2017
WELCOME to Learn, Innovate, Excel!  Our goal with this newsletter is to provide useful information and tips that will help you save time, be more productive, and also reduce risk. This information complements our SE University program, by introducing you to tips on a wide variety of topics affecting structural engineers.

If you have any tips you would like to share as part of a future Learn, Innovate, Excel newsletter, please email Lisa Willard or Brian Quinn

Learn1 WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE? OMF VS IMF VS SMF

Are you able to quickly recall the different code requirements for Intermediate Moment Frames and Special Moment Frames? For many engineers who don't design in seismically active regions every day, anything beyond a standard R=3 seismic design might require some study on the current requirements for drift and strength design in moment frame construction. However, even if seismic design requirements are second nature, there are often provisions in the Code that can be missed, even by experienced engineers.

In June 2017, Matt Mester, PE, SE from SidePlate Systems, Inc. presented Moment Frames: Design and Detailing per AISC 341 and 358 for SE University. Matt reviewed the requirements for OMF, IMF, and SMF and when they need to be applied in accordance with AISC 341. Matt covered which code provisions are required for various design aspects of each type of moment frame design and presented them in a side-by-side comparison ...  read the full article on our SE University blog.

Learn2 NEW DESIGN APPROACH RECOMMENDED
FOR CHEVRON BRACED FRAMES

Chevron braced frames are popular among steel frame design engineers due to the convenient nature of their flexible geometry which allow for wall openings and movable workpoints along the frame beam. The connections of such configurations are typically left to a contracted connection designer who, in the past, has considered these gusseted bracing connections to be designed in 'isolation' apart from the frame beam.

In May 2017, Patrick Fortney, PE, SE from University of Cincinnati presented The Chevron Effect - A Paradigm Shift in Approach to Analysis for SE University. Patrick explained why the Chevron Effect has more recently been identified as an important consideration in the design of chevron braced frames...   read the full article on our SE University blog.

InspireSEU SPEAKER INSPIRES ORGANIZATIONS:
WOUNDED WARRIORS PROJECT AND
STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS ASSOCIATION OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

SE University began the  SEU Speaker Inspires  program in 2015 as a way to "pay it forward," enabling our speakers to designate a charity/organization of their choice for SE University to make a donation to help improve our world. To learn more about the organizations that SE University speakers have chosen, please read our  SEU Speaker Inspires Blog Posts .

Patrick Fortney, PhD, PE, SE, P.Eng., University of Cinncinati
In May 2017, Patrick Fortney, PhD, PE, SE, P.Eng, from the University of Cinncinati, presented The Chevron Effect - A Paradigm Shift in Approach to Analysis. He nominated Wounded Warrior Project (https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/) for the SEU Speaker Inspires donation of the month.

Patrick shared why he chose the WWP: "The mission of the Wounded Warrior Project is to honor and empower wounded warriors who incurred a physical or mental injury, illnesses, or wound, co-incident to military service on or after September 11, 2001. As with most veterans, these veterans served our country not out of any political bent or personal goal; they made selfless commitments to protect and preserve the great freedoms that we as Americans enjoy and vowed to resist anyone acting to take our freedoms from us.

The Wounded Warrior Project not only addresses the physical ailments of these veterans but, takes a holistic approach to helping veterans to once again acclimatize to their private and personal lives; addressing issues not only suffered by the veterans but, by their families as well. I encourage everyone to view the testimonials of the wounded veterans and their families to which this charity has served. We cannot overlook or underestimate the sacrifices made by our veterans."

Matthew Mester, PE, SE, SidePlate Systems, Inc.
In June 2017, Matthew Mester, PE, SE, from SidePlate Systems, Inc., presented Moment Frames: Design and Detailing per AISC 341 and 358. He nominated the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California Foundation ( http://www.seaosc.org) for the SEU Speaker Inspires donation of the month.

The Structural Engineers Association of Southern California Foundation, in its goals to further the development of the structural engineering profession, looks for partners, be it individuals, companies or corporations, to pursue structural engineering innovation and research for use in the public domain. The foundation can assist in the development process of specific structural engineering research projects and publishing of any findings.

The foundation is dependent upon donations for its operation and funding of research projects and annual student scholarships. Matthew chose to donate to the SEAOSC Foundation for student scholarships to "help the next generation of structural engineers."

Thank you, Patrick and Matthew, for helping structural engineers with your SE University sessions, and for your designations of the Wounded Warriors Project and the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California  as  SEU Speaker Inspires  Organizations!

DIGITAL PRESENCE FOR ENGINEERS:
WHAT ARE YOUR EMAILS REALLY SAYING?

On August 9th we will be welcoming Ash Norton, from Ash Norton Engineering Leadership, to SE University to present Digital Presence for Engineers: What are Your Emails Really Saying?  This session will be held from 12:30 - 1:30 pm EDT.

Digital presence isn't something that gets discussed or often taught to structural engineers, but it should be. It helps you communicate who you are, and the value you bring to your employer, co-workers, and clients.
This SE University session will focus on how email can affect your digital presence as an engineer. A preferred form of business communication because of its accessibility, email usage has best practices that are important to be aware of so that tone and intent can be clearly understood. During this session, Ash Norton will discuss some of the common challenges of email communication, and present examples to show how email can be used to establish a strong digital presence.
Learning Objectives
After participating in this session, the learner will be able to:
  • Identify the steps of establishing a strong digital presence.
  • Identify common challenges with communicating using emails.
  • Given a digital presence goal and two email options, correctly identify which email most closely aligns with the desired digital presence.
Handouts and registration emails for this session will be sent to SE University companies on Friday, August 4th.
