Learn1 BUCKLING RESTRAINED BRACED FRAMES - SCHEDULE AND NOTES

For the seasoned seismic designer, Buckling Restrained Braced Frames may be a familiar structural system, however, some structural engineers may not be quite as familiar with their use. These prefabricated, or manufactured brace elements consist of a steel core and a buckling-restraining system, and they exhibit robust cyclical performance and have large ductility capacity. Their use in seismic applications has become more popular, and can be an option to consider for some seismic retrofit designs.

In July 2017, Kimberley Robinson, PE, SE from SunSteel, LLC presented Buckling Restrained Braced Frames for SE University. Kim's presentation covered design principles of Buckling Restrained Braces, as well as tips for coordinating with BRB manufactures to ensure the braces supplied match the design intent of the EOR. Kim provided guidelines on what is needed to properly specify Buckling Restrained Braces and referred to other published articles that include guidance on BRB design and specification ...  read the full article on our SE University blog.

Learn2 DESIGN RESOURCES FOR BUCKLING RESTRAINED BRACED FRAMES

Have you considered using Buckling Restrained Braced Frames on your steel design projects, but are unsure of where to find more information on how and where they can be used? If you are looking for guidance on including BRBFs in your next project, or want to learn more about their design process, then we have what you need!

In July 2017, Kimberley Robinson, PE, SE from SunSteel, LLC presented Buckling Restrained Braced Frames for SE University. Kim's presentation covered design principles of Buckling Restrained Braces, and she provided guidelines on what is needed to properly specify Buckling Restrained Braces.

Kim also referenced several published articles that include guidance on BRB design and specification which could prove useful for engineers looking to brush up on BRBF designs. These articles are a great resource for EORs who may be considering the use of BRBs in their next seismic design ...   read the full article on our SE University blog.

InspireSEU SPEAKER INSPIRES ORGANIZATIONS:
STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS ASSOCIATION OF UTAH SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM AND KENTUCKY EDUCATIONAL TELEVISION

SE University began the  SEU Speaker Inspires  program in 2015 as a way to "pay it forward," enabling our speakers to designate a charity/organization of their choice for SE University to make a donation to help improve our world. To learn more about the organizations that SE University speakers have chosen, please read our  SEU Speaker Inspires Blog Posts .

Kimberley Robinson, PE, SE, SunSteel, LLC
In July 2017, Kimberley Robinson, PE, SE, from SunSteel, LLC, gave a talk on Buckling Restrained Braced Frames. She chose the Structural Engineers Association of Utah Scholarship Program (http://www.seau.org/) for the SEU Speaker Inspires donation of the month.

Kim designated the same organization after her December 2016 SE University session, and she shared then why she chose the SEAU Scholarship Program: "I think that it is very important to support young and talented would-be engineers and bring them closer to their goal of a college degree and a rich and rewarding career."

Ash Norton, Ash Norton Engineering Leadership
In August 2017, Ash Norton, from Ash Norton Engineering Leadership, gave a talk on Digital Presence for Engineers: What are Your Emails Really Saying? She chose the Kentucky Educational Television ( https://www.ket.org/) for the SEU Speaker Inspires donation of the month.

Ash shared why she chose Kentucky Educational Television: "Some of my earliest memories were of watching Sesame Street and other programs on the local public broadcasting station - KET Kentucky Educational Television. Growing up in a poor family from Kentucky, my future was uncertain. However, the high-quality, educational programming that KET provided instilled in me an early love of learning.

This love of learning allowed me to excel in academics - graduating from high school a year early and ultimately earning degrees in chemical engineering and masters of business administration.

Now KET's programming is diverse and innovative, while still maintaining commitment to its values of Learning, Excellence, and Community."

Thank you, Kim and Ash, for helping structural engineers with your SE University sessions, and for your designations of the Structural Engineers Association of Utah Scholarship Program and Kentucky Educational Television  as  SEU Speaker Inspires  Organizations!
