Tips for engineers to avoid inadvertently becoming fiduciaries
Tips for engineers to avoid inadvertently becoming fiduciaries
On a daily basis, engineers tend to focus on their technical responsibilities to their clients and their most important task, to "hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public." Engineers may not consider themselves as a fiduciary for their clients, but are their actions and language in line with their intent?

In the March 2020 SE University session, Matthew Rechtien, PE, Esq., from Walter P. Moore, presented 2020 Engineering Ethics Update: Fiduciary Duties. Matt explained what a fiduciary is, situations in which engineers become fiduciaries, and how to avoid inadvertently becoming a fiduciary.

Whether engineers are fiduciaries in certain situations is open for debate. On one hand, engineering ethics rules establish duties of a fiduciary nature. Furthermore, engineers can create fiduciary status through contracts and courses or dealing. However, ethics duties do not necessarily impose civil liability. Furthermore, engineers have compelling obligations to the public and its safety. Engineers should approach fiduciary status with caution...  read the full article on our SE University blog.

Therefore, for anyone willing to make any donation to Feeding America (https://www.feedingamerica.org/about-us/press-room/feeding-america-establishes-covid-19-response-fund-help-food-banks-during), we will contribute $100.00 for each donation, up to a total of $3000 from SE Solutions. Simply email [email protected] and let us know you contributed. We would like to acknowledge those who contributed in our newsletter and on our blog, so please let us know if you would like to be acknowledged.

Practical Aspects of Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete
Practical Aspects of Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete
Steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) is still somewhat new to many structural engineers, but its uses are gaining in popularity, and structural engineers should become more familiar with its use, design, and practical applications. Clients are always looking for new, innovative, and cost effective solutions, and SFRC may be the answer on your next project.

In the February 2020 SE University session, Claire Gandee, from Bekaert, presented Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete. Claire reviewed the basics of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) and covered the applicable code references for the design of SFRC. She also covered the design approaches typically used for SFRC and made practical recommendations for specifying and for the placement/finishing of SFRC. Claire explained the benefits of using SFRC including possible economic savings...  read the full article on our SE University blog.
