Considerations at HSS Column Connections
Are you aware of the cost implications of various connection types used with HSS columns? Engineers often use repeated connection details from job to job, without fully understanding the added costs of using those details TYPICAL ALL WF BEAM TO HSS COLUMN. These hidden costs typically leave engineers wondering why HSS seems more expensive than wide flange sections, however, when detailed appropriately, HSS can be used without driving up the cost of the project.
In the July 2020 SE University session, Kim Olson, PE, from Steel Tube Institute, presented What Your Fabricator Wishes You Knew About HSS. Kim clarified which HSS column shear and moment connections are most economical and reviewed the information required for cost efficient delegated HSS truss connection design. She also explained tips for discerning availability of HSS shapes in the US and identified the aspects of AESS pertinent to HSS...

Fly Ash, Slag, or Silica Fume?
When specifying your Concrete Mix Designs, are you aware of the cost implications of pozzolans or supplementary cementitious materials included in your mix? Is fly ash, slag, or silica fume more costly and how much is needed to achieve a mix with the same 28 day strength?
In September 2020, Otto Schwarz, PE, SE, from Ryan Biggs | Clark Davis presented Concrete Mix Design for SE University. Otto reviewed the composition and curing process of structural concrete and explained the function and roles of pozzolans or supplementary cementitious materials and admixtures. He also advised on what to look for in a Concrete Mix Design Review and how to qualitatively predict the relative behavior of a concrete mix design.
Otto showed a visual which explains the Strength Activity Index for different pozzolans and supplementary cementitious materials and relates these to the costs for each material...

SEU Speaker Inspires Organizations: Operation HOPE - North County and Doctors without Borders
|
In May 2020, SE University welcomed Allen Adams, PE, SE, from Bentley Systems, Inc. / RAM, to present Practical Strategies for the Modeling and Analysis of Diaphragms. Allen designated Operation HOPE - North County (https://www.operationhopeshelter.org/) for our SEU Speaker Inspires donation for the month.
The mission of Operation HOPE - North County is to provide a safe and supporting environment for families with children and single women who are experiencing homelessness as they rebuild their lives.
Allen shared, “Over the years I have had the privilege of seeing their good work, having worked on service projects with the Boy Scouts and through church that benefitted that organization. They provide a much needed service for a vulnerable group of people.”
|
In June 2020, SE University welcomed Brad Davis, PhD, SE, from Davis Structural Engineering, to present Steel Framed Floor Design for Vibration Sensitive Equipment. Brad designated Doctors without Borders (https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/) for our SEU Speaker Inspires donation for the month.
Doctors without Borders, or Medicins Sans Frontieres, provides medical humanitarian aid where the needs are greatest, and often go to places where other organizations can’t or won’t operate. Historically, they have not run medical projects in the US, however in March 2020, MSF launched temporary operations in the United States in response to the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. In key sites around the country, MSF is working with local authorities and partner organizations that serve vulnerable communities with limited access to health care, such as migrants, homeless people, and other marginalized or neglected groups.
Thank you, Allen and Brad, for helping structural engineers with your SE University session, and for your designations of Operation HOPE - North County and Doctors without Borders as our SEU Speaker Inspires Organizations of the Month!

The following states have license renewals on November 30:
Illinois SE (November 30)
ALL engineers in the following states have license renewals on December 31st:
Alabama
North Carolina
Georgia
Washington*
Mississippi
SOME engineers in the following states have license renewals on December 31st:
Arkansas
New Mexico
Iowa
North Dakota
Missouri
Oregon
Nebraska
*These states do not have continuing education requirements.
In addition to the states listed above, there are other states that may require renewal based on your initial date of licensure or other rules for that state. Please check your license information to confirm your renewal dates.
For more information about license renewal, please visit our Continuing Education Requirements by State page, where you can click on states in which you are licensed to see the license renewal date, as well as the continuing education requirements for that state. If you would like a complete summary of all 50 states, a PDF file is available for download below the map. This option can also be selected if you are viewing the page from a mobile device.
