Cari's Safety Corner
Q: I know we need to improve safety culture. Are there any small steps that we can start with?
A: Great question—and yes, absolutely. Improving safety culture doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, consistency, and, yes, a bit of discomfort. But don’t let that scare you off. You can start with small steps that make a big impact over time. Think of this as a marathon, not a 5K.
And while true culture change needs buy-in from leadership (it really does start at the top), everyone can play a part. Here are a few quick wins to get things moving:
Talk about safety in every meeting. Not just the big safety meetings—every meeting. It doesn’t have to take over the agenda. Just mention something: a recent concern, ask for input ("Any safety issues on your mind today?"), or share a story from another team.
At first it might feel a little forced, but over time, it becomes second nature and sends a strong message.
Train Frontline Supervisors. They’re your boots-on-the-ground culture builders. Give them regular, targeted safety training, not just on rules and regs, but on how to lead by example, use the right language, stay visible, and follow through. Help them understand
the “why” behind their role in shaping safety culture.
Mini-Safety Recognition. Every time someone brings up a concern or participates in safety efforts, thank them. On the spot. Be specific about what you appreciated. Small rewards are nice, but honest, timely verbal recognition goes further than you’d think.
Normalize reporting. Create a culture where reporting near misses or concerns isn’t just okay, it’s encouraged. Celebrate the fact that someone spoke up before something went wrong. Make it clear that reporting is about prevention, not punishment.
