In times of crisis, there is help available in southwest Missouri

You care about the communities you serve. As a Burrell Behavioral Health community partner, we want you to be informed of available pathways to care for anyone experiencing a behavioral health crisis. That's why we are sending you information about our crisis continuum of care.

Thank you for doing your part to serve our shared communities. If you have any questions about Burrell's Crisis Services or know of others who would like to receive information about crisis care available in southwest Missouri, please feel free to email us at CrisisCareInfo@burrellcenter.com. (This email is not a crisis response option — please call, text or chat 988 if you are experiencing a crisis.)

Everyone deserves a path to care during a crisis, and Burrell offers that possibility to anyone seeking treatment for mental health or substance use disorders. That is part of Burrell's mission as a Certified Community Behavioral Health Organization (CCBHO) — we offer numerous open doors to access our crisis continuum of care. As one of Burrell's community partners, we want you to be informed of all the ways our teams meet the needs of people in crisis and emotional distress.

In alignment with the Missouri Department of Mental Health and U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Burrell offers people in crisis somewhere to call, somewhere to go and someone to turn to.

"I had over 20 years of active substance use, and I am a survivor of trying to take my own life. Some of my darkest times came when I was alone with no one to call, no one to come talk with me and nowhere to go. Having help during a crisis saves lives.

"Almost seven years into my recovery, I went from a client of Burrell to now overseeing community engagement and supporting others experiencing the challenges I faced. I love working for Crisis Services because today I get to give back everything I needed in the darkest of time."

-James Hess, Lead Peer Specialist, Burrell Behavioral Health

There is someone to respond

During a crisis, meeting someone where they are saves lives. Burrell's Mobile Crisis Response Team provides compassionate, face-to-face interventions for individuals in crisis. They are dispatched by the crisis team (ACI or 988) to engage, assess, de-escalate, and connect them to appropriate services, while not responding to active suicide attempts or medical emergencies.

There is somewhere to go

Mental health crises have too often been addressed by staff in jails or emergency rooms. To connect people in need of immediate care with trained professionals and to reduce the number of mental health crises our community partners must address, Missouri’s Department of Mental Health supports Behavioral Health Crisis Centers (BHCCs), including Burrell's Behavioral Crisis Centers (BCCs). Across Missouri, these centers offer immediate crisis care, access to psychiatric medication support, Medication-Assisted Treatment for opioid use, brief therapy, peer counseling, restorative rest, 23-hour observation, referral to appropriate follow-up treatment and more life-saving treatments.

Springfield’s BCC is located at 800 S. Park, Springfield, MO 65802, and it is open 24/7, 365 for all individuals 18 and up. It is completely voluntary, and free to all individuals in need.

Springfield’s BCC opened in 2020, and it is helping thousands. According to the latest annual Missouri Behavioral Health Council data:

  • Springfield’s BCC is the busiest 24/7 BHCC in the state.

  • Springfield BCC providers prescribe medications for mental health and substance use at a higher rate than the state average.

  • 80% of clients are stabilized at the Springfield BCC; only 5% require escalated treatment at area hospitals.

Construction is currently underway in Springfield on Missouri's first Youth Behavioral Crisis Center, which will be part of Burrell’s Youth Resiliency Campus. Learn more about the project here.
