Learn from a Local
By Suzanne Davis

I enjoy being a senior. Fortunately I'm in pretty good health and have all of the rich resources of the Lincoln Square community at my disposal. I'm always looking to avail myself of the discounts that are offered to the " over 65 " set- like half-price transit fares and senior admissions at the movies. Here's a really great one that was right under my nose and I had no idea about it: SilverSneakers.

SilverSneakers is an insurance benefit included in more than 65 Medicare health plans that provides gym memberships for their insured, usually at no additional cost, if the health plan is one that the participating clubs accept. Here in the Lincoln Square neighborhood, the New York Sports Club on West 62nd offers this program along with the two clubs just to the district's north on West 73rd and West 76th Streets. See the website:  silversneakers.com for details.

I live right across from the one on West 62nd Street, but had never visited until last week. They offer all manner of fitness machines and weights and special classes for seniors. Rachel, the SilverSneakers coordinator, will help you sign up at  212.265.0995.

We all know that regular exercise is important, especially as we age.  Often the excuse for not joining a gym is lack of time and money. You can always make time for something that is important, and with this wonderful program, it may not cost you a thing.

Suzanne Davis is a Lincoln Square Resident, Lincoln Square BID Board Member, and neighborhood booster.

If you're up to traveling outside of Lincoln Square, several YMCA locations offer SilverSneaker programs as well, like the 14th Street YMCA. And, our neighborhood's own West Side YMCA also offers its own SilverSneakers senior services, which you can find out more about by calling  212.875.4100.
The Metropolitan Opera Summer HD Festival
One of the most popular events of the summer in Lincoln Square, the Metropolitan Opera's Annual Summer HD Festival, is returning for its eighth season beginning on Friday, August 26. Chairs will line Lincoln Center's Josie Robertson Plaza as ten performances from the acclaimed Live in HD series  will be projected on a giant screen hung on the opera house itself.

For the third year in a row, the Met is collaborating  with the Film Society of Lincoln Center to open the festival with an opera-related Hollywood film. This year's feature film is the 1985 Best Picture Academy Award Winner Amadeus. Click here to see the schedule for all of the upcoming operas in the festival.
TKTS at Lincoln Center
In addition to Lincoln Center performances, you can now get discount tickets to Broadway and Off Broadway productions, which are regularly sold at the other TKTS locations (Times Square, South Street Seaport, Downtown Brooklyn), at the David Rubenstein Atrium.

These tickets will be available at the David Rubenstein Atrium's Zucker Box Office located on Broadway between 62nd and 63rd Streets. The box office is open Tu esday through Saturdays from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Same-day tickets will be sold for all performances and matinee tickets will also be sold the day before the performance (in addition to the day of the performance). TKTS discount tickets are mostly 50% off and have a per-ticket service charge of $4.50 each. Week-of tickets will still be available for Lincoln Center's performances.
Central Park Restoration Project
As part of a larger project for the reconstruction of the Southwest Corner, the Central Park Conservancy will be performing in-kind restoration to the Central Park perimeter at Central Park West from West 60th to West 62nd Streets. The perimeter work will include in-kind replacement of the hexagonal asphalt block pavers in the central walkway, resetting of the granite block in the tree margins, and reconstruction of existing curbs and pedestrian ramps. The Conservancy will also be replacing the existing benches.

To follow the progress of the work being done in Central Park, please visit centralparknyc.org/restoration. You can learn more about the Southwest Corner reconstruction here. Kids Can Eat Free Every Sunday at BONMi
BONMi is an award-winning Vietnamese inspired fast casual restaurant in the Lincoln Square neighborhood. The eatery is passionate about the colors and flavors of Vietnamese cuisine, offering salads, rice and noodle bowls and a unique version of the famous Vietnamese sandwich, Bahn Mi. But, they understand that some textures and spices common to Vietnamese foods are not common in America--and when food is not so common, generally, kids don't want to eat it.

So, BONMi has developed a new kids menu, inviting all kids to eat free every Sunday; that is, one free kids entrée comes with the purchase of one regular entrée. The offer is available for dine in only.

Why create a kids menu you may ask?
REASON #1 They want folks to enjoy their flavorful food and if the kids are happy, well...
REASON #2 Children all across Vietnam and Southeast Asia enjoy the flavors used in their authentic foods everyday and BONMi wanted to figure out a way to slowly expose kids to the healthy, fun and tasty flavors of that region.

BONMi's new vegan friendly kids menu features the following items ( see an online copy here):
  • Grilled Cheese on Brioche
  • Chicken and Cheese Sandwich
  • BBQ Pork Sandwich
  • Kids Noodle Bowl (choice of veggies, tofu or chicken)
  • Kids Rice Bowl (choice of veggies, tofu or chicken)
BONMi is located at 150 West 62nd Street between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenue. Visit them online at eatbonmi.com to check out the full menu. Then, visit them in person, grab some delicious Vietnamese food, and enjoy the location's new outdoor seating!
