What We’re Watching

CAWP Senior Scholar and Director of Research Kelly Dittmar has compiled an early analysis of emerging trends and races to watch in the 2024 election. In What to Watch for Women in 2024 Congressional and Gubernatorial Elections, Dittmar examines our candidate data and discovers that:

  • The number of women running for the U.S. House is down.
  • Women continue to be significantly underrepresented in the candidate pool.
  • The number of incumbent women not running for re-election is at a high.

In addition to this data analysis, Dittmar also looks at key races in the 2024 elections, including contests that could lead to:

  • The first openly trans person in Congress.
  • The first Latina to represent Arizona in Congress.
  • The first Asian American woman to represent Oregon in Congress.
  • The first woman to represent New Jersey in the U.S. Senate.
  • The first woman to represent North Dakota in the U.S. House.
