Attachment Style 101


The way that we bond and connect with each other is a curious process: Some of us attach quickly to others, some of us take a bit longer to trust, and some of us choose to reject connection all together. These human-relational patterns have been studied by psychologists since the 1950's, eventually producing what we refer to as "Attachment Theory." This theory suggests that the attachments we form in childhood have the ability to influence our behavior in our current relationships. This theory can help us to understand the fundamental "whys" of how we think and act in our relationships, and provide us insight on our behavioral and emotional patterns.

Meet the New Faces of HCE

Since our move to HoneyComb Equestrian, our equine family has grown by many hooves and paws! Meet some of our newest faces!



Emma

  • 9 year old Thoroughbred mare.
  • Emma is an ex-racehorse. She is owned by barn manager, Suzie. 
  • She loves to be groomed and loves to follow her best friend Ali around the field!





Stormy

  • 16 year old Quarter Horse gelding.
  • Stormy was a former equine therapy horse at the BEC. 
  • He is a fan favorite for riding with his calm, quiet demeanor. He loves to take naps out in the field!



Wall-E

  • 18 year old Appendix Quarter Horse gelding.
  • Used to have a career doing para-dressage (i.e., riders with physical disabilities).
  • LOVES sugar cubes and all pets!


Ali

  • 20 year old  Arabian/Quarter Horse cross mare.
  • Ali was a former equine therapy horse at the BEC and is owned by HCE owner Kristen Murelli.
  • She is the head boss of all the mares at HCE!



Oliver

  • 8 year old Fresian/Saddlebred cross gelding.
  • Oliver is owned by Kristen, the barn owner, and he actively competes in the dressage discipline. 
  • Oliver is often referred to as a "golden retriever" due to his kind, "puppy dog" personality.



Otter the barn cat!

Willow

  • 20 year old Halflinger mare
  • Willow is the oldest member of the HCE herd, but you would never be able to tell. 
  • She is known for being quick under saddle and a bit pushy on the ground. Once she has your respect, she will follow her person ANYWHERE.

Bailey

  • 16 year old Arabian mare
  • Bailey has two names! There is a student at the barn who is also named Bailey. When Bailey the horse came off the trailer at HCE, Kristen's four-year old daughter said, "I want to call her Rainbow instead!" 
  • Now she is lovingly called, "Bailey-Rainbow" so as not to be confused with the human Bailey.

What’s the Deal with Carbohydrates?

Do you find yourself avoiding or feeling guilty after eating carbohydrate heavy foods like bread, pasta, or fruit? Carbohydrates have become synonymous with the idea of weight gain and poor health in the media today. With diets such as Whole 30, Paleo, and Keto making regular headlines, it's no wonder carbohydrates are seen as “bad."


Carbohydrates, however, are the most important energy source our bodies have. Your body prefers carbohydrates over protein and fat to provide the needed energy to get through your day, and carbohydrates are the ONLY source of energy that your brain can use. Carbohydrates are the sugars, starches, and fibers that make up foods we eat such as fruit, bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, and sweetened products like cookies or energy drinks. Without carbohydrates, our bodies wouldn’t have the energy they need to move your muscles, think clearly, or get your body through eight hours of sleep without having to wake up to eat. Carbohydrates also provide our body with important B vitamins that ensure your body can break down and absorb the nutrition from all the other foods you eat.


Does it feel stressful to eat these foods?

Try one of the following affirmations by saying it aloud to yourself or writing it down and leaving it somewhere for you to find during your next meal or snack:

  • I can eat the foods I enjoy.
  • Carbohydrates provide my body with needed energy.
  • I need to eat no matter what my body looks like.
  • I am enough, just as I am.
  • The food I eat does not define me.

You deserve full permission to eat the foods that sound good to you- even the carb heavy ones! Next time you think twice about eating a bowl of pasta, you can relax knowing you are giving your body exactly the fuel it needs to get you through the day.

Staff Spotlight

Sydney earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Michigan-Dearborn and her Master’s degree in Clinical Behavioral Psychology from Eastern Michigan University.


Sydney is passionate about working with adolescents and emerging adults on issues related to eating disorders, body image, self-esteem, anxiety, and mood disorders. She is a core therapist to the MFS eating disorder treatment and recovery team, and also works with couples or those struggling with interpersonal/relationship concerns.


Sydney has a strong background in behavioral- and attachment-based therapy and takes an integrative approach to treatment. She utilizes evidence-based treatment approaches such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBIs) to create a treatment plan tailored for a client’s specific needs and goals.


Outside of work, Sydney enjoys coaching, listening to music, exercising, spending time with family/friends, playing with her dog Layla, and reading.
