Dear Members,

January brings an in-between space, where the richness of last year's programming resonates strongly, and plans for 2023 unfold. As we begin our 17th year as a Network, we remain comitted to our founding mission: to inspire, nuture and promote farm-based education, and excited to see how the mission will come alive this year. We have no shortage of ideas for program offerings and are working slow and steady to bring them to light. As always, we welcome your ideas too! Be in touch any time to share a challenge, success, or question you have. Chances are, others are wondering the same things!

Be well, and see you soon,

Vera Simon-Nobes

Food Sovereignty Booklet from La Via Campesina

Farm to school is often described as highly interdisciplinary, inviting students to explore food systems from a variety of perspectives. La Via Campesina, an international movement, has created an illustrated booklet that explores new possibilities for food sovereignty while raising questions about climate change, indigeneity, global trade, and so much more. The booklet is freely available in English, Spanish, and French.

WEBINAR

Culturally Inclusive Teaching in the Garden

February 1, 7 p.m. ET (Online). $0-$50. By their nature, gardens embody diversity. Garden education is increasingly recognized as an interdisciplinary approach that integrates academic goals, health and wellness, place-based education, and community connections and relationships. However, discussion of culture is often missing in garden-based education. To validate and celebrate the interests and experiences of our students, we will delve deep into the significance of culture as it relates to food and gardens and also as it relates to the diverse populations with whom we work. Hosted by KidsGardening Register now.

WEBINAR

Best Practice in Human-Animal Interactions

January 26, 10 a.m. ET (Online). Free. The novelty of goat yoga and cow hugging have captured the public imagination, but occupational therapists, psychologists and special education teachers already knew that, with careful planning, farm animals can help people with various needs in exciting ways. Hosted by the International Association of Human-Animal Interaction Organizations. Register now.

Every year we listen to our members, and 2022 was no exception. We heard from one that FBEN β€œis my go-to place,” and from another that our workshop, β€œdidn't ever feel rushed, I never felt obligated, I felt accepted where I was.” In September and October, we convened in person for the first time since October 2019! Meet our 2022 guest faclitators, host farms, and hear about FBEN from participants' themselves in our Year in Review.
