A peek inside the classroom:
Level 2 Group ESL is ready for spring!
Level 2 ESL class
Everyone is thinking spring, including our Level 2 Group ESL class! Our evening level 2 learners shared their favorite plants on screen and used this as an opportunity to practice adjectives. Highlights included “twisted,” “thirsty,” and “fuzzy.” Teacher Ilana says, “I always enjoy when students share a piece of their home with the group. It makes our English learning environment so much more personal and engaging!”
Citizenship allows Phurbu to correct her name
Phurbu
When Literacy Network learner Phurbu took the oath and became a U.S. citizen this winter, she was able to make an official name change she had wanted for all her years in the United States.

When she arrived in the U.S. after leaving Tibet, because of confusion in the immigration process, some official documents list her first name as her last name and give "Fnu" as her first name. Fnu is a government abbreviation for "first name unknown." Other government documents give her only one name.

Because she passed her citizenship interview, she earned the right to choose a new last name. This change is very important to her. Now she will no longer have to explain that Phurbu is her first name and, yes, she has a last name, too.

Congratulations, Phurbu!
