National Day of Truth and Reconciliation

September 30th is Canada's National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. This day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities who continue to feel the impacts to this day. At Leave No Trace we are continuing to forge new relationships with our Indigenous communities across Turtle Island. Please visit our Reconciliation page and the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation to learn more

The Importance of Leaving No Trace

All it took was one bag of chips to be left behind to disrupt an entire cave ecosystem. This incident illustrates clearly just how much one's actions, no matter how small they may seem, can impact our environment. Leave No Trace Canada Board Member, Clara-Jane Blye, spoke with National Geographic about the incident (and the broader issue of littering and its impacts) in this article. Check it out!

We also invite you to take a moment to refresh your knowledge of the third Leave No Trace principle, "Dispose of Waste Properly". You can check it out and learn some helpful tips here!

Leave No Trace and Foraging

Can you forage and still practice the Leave No Trace Principles? The short answer is yes!

The long answer is also yes, as long as you keep certain practices and precautions in mind. These can include informing yourself on proper harvest techniques to allow for regrowth, knowing local land laws and restrictions, emphasizing the foraging of invasive and non-endangered species, foraging only things you know you will use, and the practice of "leave most of what you find".
