Climax Donates Equipment to Local Schools
Lee County schools had the opportunity to get new equipment to prepare their students for future careers thanks to Climax Molybdenum.

Central Lee Ag Instructor Tom Boeck stated, “We’re grateful that they thought of us and it will make a big impact on the students.” All three Lee County public schools were invited to look at the equipment Climax was hoping to donate and choose what would best fit their programs.

“We are pleased to support our local schools and provide equipment that helps prepare students for the 21st century workplace,” said Javier Guevara, General Manager-Fort Madison. Central Lee received the CAT Track loader and John Deere 970 tractor pictured above along with other smaller equipment while Keokuk Community Schools received a portable welder.

“At Climax, we value partnerships that contribute to the long-term sustainability of our community, including workforce development” said Guevara. “We hope these resources help equip students with real-world knowledge and skills for career success.”

“Interactions like this not only help our programs grow and allow hands-on learning but also expose students to different employers in the area” said Boeck. Boeck explained many of his students were not aware of the careers at Climax until they provided the tour and equipment.

It was Central Lee junior Devin Jeremy-Tweety’s first time interacting with the employer. “We’re really excited about the new dozer! It’ll make managing our FFA projects a lot easier and we get to do the maintenance on it.” Devin plans to be a diesel mechanic after high school.

Also, a Thank You goes to Buford Dozing & Excavating for helping the schools transport the equipment.

Lee County Schools Take 1st and 2nd Place at SCC Skills Throw down

Individuals and teams from 8 high schools competed at Southeastern Community College's Skills Throw Down with Fort Madison taking 1st in the Carpentry division and Keokuk taking 2nd place. Keokuk also won 1st place in the Welding division.

Opportunities like the Skills Competition at SCC allow students to see how their skills compare to other area schools and show off their work to local employers.

Fort Madison Construction Tech Instructor Clink Kobelt said, "The fact that the judges were people from local contracting companies really added a level of pressure to the competition. The students competing were well aware that their work was being scrutinized by potential employers. Allowing students the opportunity to showcase their skills, both carpentry skills and their soft skills (communication, problem solving, teamwork, etc.) is what it's all about."
Keokuk Industrial Tech Teacher Mat May commented, "This year was a great experience for our students. They took 2nd in carpentry and really have sharpened their carpentry skills."

"Welding we had an awesome accomplishment with a 1st place finish. Plus new students that haven't competed before had the chance to show their skills." said May.

Local industry representatives judged the projects and examine them for accuracy, proper use of tools, safety, craftsmanship, speed, and layout.

Investigate Your Future
May 21st 9 am- 1:30 pm
This is a regional event focused on getting local middle school girls interested in STEM careers.
Each student will attend four 50 minute informational and hands-on sessions about STEM careers.

While the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that technology professionals will experience the highest growth in job numbers between now and 2030, only a fraction of girls and women are likely to pursue careers that enable them to fulfill these new jobs.

Investigate Your Future encourages girls to explore STEM careers and education. Interested in showing off your STEM career and showing girls what's possible? Contact Dana Millard .
