FRIDAY 2/24/23

Greetings! Lots to report and announce! Please take a moment to check out the latest news + upcoming events...
Each year, the AIA dedicates time, energy and resources toward advocating at the federal level for its members, the practice, profession and policy issues at hand that affect us at all levels - local, state, national.

At the recent AIA Lobby Day on Feb. 15th, 2023 in Washington, D.C., more than 400 architects and chapter leaders met with representatives/staff to discuss two bipartisan bills that are on the table: the Democracy in Design Act and the Resilient AMERICA Act. Both have significant implications across the nation and we invite you to take a look at the bills and familiarize yourself with the details.

Further, there are template letters and contact information should you want to email or call directly:

Feel free to reach out to your chapter staff if you have any questions or need additional guidance regarding how to proceed.
Yesterday, on February 23, 2023 NCARB highlighted an exciting announcement: eliminating the 5-year rolling clock for the ARE. AIA fully supports this change and applauds NCARB's leadership for this action. Over the next several weeks, we'll work on several initiatives, including partnering with NCARB and state components where regulatory barriers may exist in implementing this change.

Please read AIA's full press release on the NCARB announcement by clicking here.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Jen Schlueter, Managing Director of Component Engagement.

Practice With Purpose: How to Radically Redesign the Practice of Architecture
Date: Tuesday, February 28th
Time: 12-1pm
Speakers:
  • William Leddy, FAIA | Principal | LMS Architects
  • Ryan Jang, AIA | Principal | LMS Architects

Units: 1 LU

Description:
How can we redesign the practice of architecture to focus the transformative power of design on some of society’s most urgent issues?

Today, our communities face overwhelming challenges, including the accelerating climate emergency, persistent social injustice, chronic homelessness, and the need for innovative educational environments that prepare young people for a resilient future. These are not discrete phenomena. They are inextricably linked in a combined ecological and societal emergency that cries out for creative, integrated solutions. Architects are uniquely positioned to respond to this profound emergency. But to succeed, the design values and practice of our profession must be rapidly transformed within the next decade. Architects must become creative agents of change, providing the vision and expertise to lead our communities toward an equitable, resilient, zero carbon future for all. Business as usual is no longer viable. We must practice with purpose.
This session will offer practical strategies in the daily practice of architecture. What can one person do to address the great challenges of our time? Take collective action through design every day.

The 60-Minute MBA for Architects
Date: Wednesday, March 8th
Time: 12-1pm
Speaker:
Steve Burns, FAIA | Founder | The Well-Designed Firm

Units: 1 LU

Description:
Being a brilliant architect rarely translates into having a successful business. With all the years of education and training to make us experts in our profession, the skills needed to have a successful business were conveniently overlooked. This webinar will fill the void and provide you with the business management highlights that every firm needs to apply to achieve their full potential.
In this session, we will learn the fundamentals of all successful AE firms and provide the basis for making well-grounded business decisions. We will learn how firms can transition from being professionals providing services, to highly tuned businesses that can identify the needs of the marketplace and create services and products that are appropriately priced and yield consistent and greater profits.
Rather than seeking out new projects that merely build upon your current skills, you will start from a business-thinking mindset, where processes that are critical to building a thriving firm are examined and constituted in your firm. We will explore the importance of data within an architect firm and demonstrate how careful collection and interpretation can lead your firm into more exciting and profitable territory.
Join us for an engaging, live webinar presented by Steven Burns, FAIA, as he shares lessons learned over 35 years working with over 1,300 architecture firms.

Date: Wednesday March 22nd
Time: 12-1pm

Speaker:
Pete Jefferson, PE, WELL Faculty, LEED AP | Principal, BranchPattern

Units: 1 LU/HSW (pending approval)

Description:
At 14,115 feet above sea level, Pikes Peak is a unique high mountain summit accessible to visitors from all over the world, despite being in the harshest climate in North America. Despite the obstacles posed by the harsh climate, the vision of the Summit Complex became one that aligned closely with the petals of the Living Building Challenge, and ultimately certification became a project goal.

At the heart of the design response is a bioclimatic design approach, incorporating elements of biomimicry and regenerative design principles to achieve it. Having opened in June 2021 as the highest elevation public building in North America, the project is now open to visitors. As the project team continues to live with the building to measure and optimize performance. Design decisions are constantly being tested by the climate, and in this webinar you will get to hear what worked, what didn’t, and lessons learned in the Summit Complex project.
