Dr. Lynnee Denise
Artist, Scholar, Writer, and DJ
About our Presenter:

Lynnée Denise is an artist, scholar, writer, and DJ whose work reflects on underground cultural movements, the 1980s, migration studies, theories of escape, and electronic music of the African Diaspora. Denise coined the phrase “DJ Scholarship” to re-position the role of the DJ from a party purveyor to an archivist, cultural custodian, and information specialist of music with critical value. Through interactive workshops, lectures, and presentations at universities, conferences, and performance venues, Denise harnesses music as a medium for vital public dialogue on how to transform the way that music of the Black Atlantic is understood in its social context and beyond entertainment. Denise lives and works between Amsterdam and London.
About Legacies of American Slavery:

Legacies of American Slavery is a multi-year project initiative of the Council of Independent Colleges, in cooperation with the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition at the MacMillan Center, Yale University. It is supported by a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with supplemental funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Dillard University was selected as one of the regional collaboration partners that will focus on the fundamental theme Cultural Creativity , defined as cultural expression in all its forms as a way to understand and cope with American slavery and its aftermath. Through the Cultural Creativity theme, Dillard will explore the following sub-themes: Food, Music & Tourism. All lectures, activities and research are free and open to the public. Additionally, we look forward to releasing more information about our upcoming film series and regional conference.
Join us for our next Legacies of American Slavery Lecture with Zella Palmer & Therese Nelson. Details coming soon! Registration is now available online on our Eventbrite page!
