For most of us, creating a life and legacy that we can be proud of, well, usually takes a lifetime. It is often a myriad of decisions, of all sizes and importance, that lead us down life’s path. Should we turn left or right, go straight ahead, take a step back, reassess, plunge forward; the list can go on and on.
On October 30, 2018, Blue Hill Heritage Trust staff were invited by Steve Allen to go on a tractor ride to look at an important piece of land, and part of his family legacy, in Blue Hill that nestles up against First Pond and Carleton Stream. Steve Allen and his forebearers had owned and lived on this land since the middle 1800s, using the natural resources and stewarding this place with great care for centuries.
Over the next few years, through the craziness of COVID-19, we chipped away at the requirements to satisfy NAWCA (North American Wetland Conservation Act) grant funding for the purchase of the 241-acre parcel, and raised stewardship funding through the Anahata Foundation for the long term care of the property that includes 80 acres of wetland habitat, locally known as Duck Marsh, and the surrounding upland forest including a large portion of Bog Island. On February 22, 2023 BHHT closed on this lovely property, the first conserved property for BHHT in our First Pond Focus Area.
