Quarterly Newsletter May 2023

Updates
A newsletter for Legacy Leaders regarding projects and civic engagement.

From the Desk of Claudia
Spring is here! As I write this, May is experiencing April showers; however, the temperature is rising. It is wonderful to see people out enjoying the outdoor fresh air.

Seeking projects & initiatives: Legacy Leaders are primed to support community projects and initiatives with their expertise. I invite you to share your project ideas with me or help to identify collaboration opportunities with civic entities that have identified needs or articulated a need for change. Legacy Leaders can lend our support to examine the project differently and articulate a different solution or possible approach. I can make contact to learn where LL can help.

We want Legacy Leaders to play an integral role in shaping efforts that effect change. Now is the perfect time for Legacy Leaders to expand in numbers and increase its efforts and projects. Please invite your friends and former colleagues to contact me (cowens@cleveleads.org) and get on our mailing list to learn how their experience and desire can support, direct, and vision the future.
Advance Leadership Institute (ALI) 2024 will be focusing on advocacy. We are recruiting for the ALI 2024 cohort. If you or your colleagues are interested in sharing your advocacy efforts on five policies that guide each session - housing, health, education, workforce development, or public safety - contact me to learn more and confirm your availability to participate. Legacy Leaders contribute knowledge and understanding to this dynamic multigenerational program cohort.
Legacy Leaders’ podcast series “Your Encore” is kicking off this month!
“Your Encore” is an opportunity for Legacy Leaders to share their stories about moving from work to retirement to a second or third act. It attracts listeners who are looking for a community, who want an inspiring look at life after retirement – one that will leave them feeling empowered and ready to take on anything. Stay tuned for Legacy Leaders Ron Soeder, Bob Shields and Charles See’s episodes to debut this month. If you are interested in recording a podcast, have someone you would like or want us to interview, let me know.
Some suggested topics:
  • Second Act Stories: Lessons learned after retirement and advice to give someone to consider pursuing a Second Act.
  • Moving from corporate to nonprofit work.
  • What do you do when you retire?
  • What does successful retirement look like?
  • How to expand connections beyond former employment networks.
  • How to balance retirement and expanding your civic engagement.
  • Living without an IT department and an executive assistant.
Legacy Leader Encore Highway 71 South Project will launch the Age-Friendly Guide to Outdoor and Recreational Trails from Northeast to Southeast Ohio - just in time to kick off the Memorial Day holiday weekend. CLC, The Dayton Foundation, Bike Cleveland, Cleveland Metroparks and Legacy Leaders Richard and Angela Huckabee and Bob Shields have been actively involved to identify area trails that are age-friendly.

If these activities sound of interest to you and you would like to join in, please contact me at cowens@cleveleads.org or 216-650-3312. I wish you and your family good health as we progress forward to an enjoyable summer!

"One of the beautiful aspects of ALI and being a Legacy Leader is that once the year long program is done . . . you are not. Rather, and regardless of your prior experiences and skills, you are even better prepared to work in the public realm. I continue to be especially active in environmental issues where I can apply what I learned about the Stokes policies and serve as a Legacy Leader. I mentioned the word ... serve. My military career was all about service and today I continue to serve ... keeping in line with the purpose of the Cleveland Leadership Center. If I have one regret with regard to the Cleveland Leadership Center, the Advanced Learning Institute, and the Legacy Leaders program it is that I wish I had known of them earlier.” (Robert Shields, ALI 20 & LL)
