From the Flight Deck

Report cards for Quarter 2 and Semester 1 are available on Skyward. Please review your child’s grades with them.

The School Advisory Council (SAC) held its regularly-scheduled meeting in the media center on Tuesday night. These are the highlights:

Review of PM/A1 & PM/A 2 data; funding approvals for Saturday School, Positive Behavior Intervention Support incentives program, 8th grade author visit.

* At our mid-year point, all tested content areas have seen growth and improvement with the exception of Algebra, which saw a 6% decrease from PMA1 to PMA2. SAC approved a funding request to create 18 hours of additional instruction and targeted intervention support. This instructional opportunity consists of 6 Saturdays for 3 hours each starting at the end of February and ending in April. Families of students who have been identified will be contacted this week.

* Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) is an ongoing commitment to supporting students, educators, and families through systems change. SAC approved funding for student incentives that align with our positive culture and climate among students and staff.

* SAC also approved an 8th grade author visit and focused writing workshop with Sunshine State Young Reader Award author Kerry O’Malley Cerra. Mrs. O’Malley Cera will visit the flight deck on January 22nd and provide our 8th grade students with practice tips, strategies, and advice with a curriculum aligned focus on her perspective on how to write clearly and effectively.

Our next SAC meeting is scheduled for February 11th at 6pm in the media center.

Last week we held basketball tryouts and had a great turnout. Our first game will be January 27th at Discovery. Please come out and support our boys’ and girls’ basketball teams as they begin their season.

On Thursday, our 8th graders had a visit from University High School to provide information about the variety of classes offered next year. East River High School Counselors will be visiting January 24th. It’s time for our 8th graders to fill out their course registration form for high school.

On January 21st, thirty of our top spellers will be competing in the Scripps School Spelling Bee. Let’s wish our talented spellers good luck!

Let’s Read OCPS, a district-wide reading challenge, is taking place from January 27th to April 30th, 2025. This challenge invites students and faculty to collectively read 20 million minutes. Students should individually aim to read at least 500 minutes. Research has shown that reading at least 20 minutes per day increases students’ exposure to vocabulary and improves comprehension. More information about the challenge can be found in this edition of JIA.

I hope everyone has a wonderful three-day weekend. This is a reminder that there is no school on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Classroom Highlight: Ms. Ali’s Math Class

Ms. Ali was teaching her students Analyzing Proportional Relationships, which is very challenging and tricky as it has so many concepts. That's why she chose to get them to practice measuring their understanding and lower any possible stress, by creating a Jeopardy game. She wanted students to feel challenged to want to win as well as work within a team to practice these difficult concepts.

Personal Finance Literacy

Students in Legacy Middle Teacher of the Year Ms. Fray’s first and second period classes are the first students in the entire state of Florida to have exposure to personal finance at the middle school level.

Share of American households who feel they can meet important financial needs:

Source: Key Bank 2025 Financial Mobility Survey

* The bank survey suggests that nearly 90% of Americans are confident in paying rent/mortgage, but saving money for retirement or for a down payment on a house are out of range for most. Teaching students about the principles of saving, the power of compound interest, etc. is important while in middle school.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Dr. King was a Top Student Who Loved to Read

President Ronald Reagan designated the third Monday of January as a national holiday to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy, starting in 1986. Sadly, Dr. King was only 39 years old on the evening of his assassination in April 1968. Still, his influence remains today as we observe the holiday this Monday, January 20th. Most people are somewhat knowledgeable about his many successes as a civil rights leader, but few know much about his commitment to his own personal education.

Dr. King spent much of his childhood reading. A voracious reader, he began memorizing passages from the Bible early on and later skipped two high school grades as he was such a brilliant student. During his two high school years, public speaking became a passion and he led the debate team. He entered Morehouse College at 15 and graduated college at 19. When he was growing up and through college, Dr. King was influenced by the writings of Henry David Thoreau, Leo Tolstoy and Mahatma Gandhi. From this, he developed the idea of using nonviolent resistance to secure civil rights for Black Americans.

Dr. King's Lesson for our Jets

We share these insights at this year's Dr. MLK, Jr. Day as a reminder to all of our Legacy students of the power from daily attendance and getting an education. Equipped with a thirst for knowledge and a love of reading, Dr. King became American's outspoken leader for the civil rights movement. And along the way, he received the Nobel Peace Prize at age 35 plus was named by Time magazine as one of the Top 100 Most Influential Persons of the 20th Century. We have incredible students at Legacy. We hope that each of our Jets, like Dr. King, will make education among their most important goals in the new year.

Martin Luther King Jr. On Morality

The time is always right to do what is right.

~ Martin Luther King Jr., civil rights leader

Thank you for reading. Enjoy your Dr. MLK, Jr. holiday!
