2025 Basketball Season opens away Monday
Our first basketball game will be Monday, January 27th at Discovery. Please come out and support our boys’ and girls’ basketball teams as they begin their season.
Legacy's Top Spellers
On January 21st, sixteen of our top spellers competed in the Scripps School Spelling Bee. Congratulations to our winner, Helen Vu, who will go on to represent Legacy Middle School in the District Spelling Bee!
District-Wide Reading Challenge
Let’s Read OCPS, a district-wide reading challenge, is taking place from January 27th to April 30th, 2025. This challenge invites students and faculty to collectively read 20 million minutes. Each week, OCPS will be awarding prizes to individual students and schools. Students should individually aim to read at least 500 minutes. Research has shown that reading at least 20 minutes per day increases students’ exposure to vocabulary and improves comprehension. More information about the challenge can be found in this edition of JIA.
Literacy Week at Legacy kicks off Monday
We will also be celebrating Literacy Week, January 27th – 31st, with literacy games and activities in the media center, a door decorating contest, spirit week dress up days, and D.E.A.R - Drop Everything and Read.

Falcon Experience Night at East River High School for incoming 9th Graders, 5:30-7:00pm (ERHS Cafeteria). Adam Chappell, the Head Football Coach at East River High School, will have a table for the Football program. Students will have an opportunity to meet the coaches and players. If you are interested in playing High School Football, stop by their table.

During Literacy Week, January 27th – 31st, students and staff will be participating in various literacy-based activities:
• Building and Literacy Activities in the Media Center
• Mystery Reader
• Door Decorating Contest – winning class receives a doughnut party
• Expository Writing Challenge – We challenge students to write an Expository Essay in response to the following prompt:
"Reading is a powerful tool that impacts our lives in many ways. Write an essay that explains the value of reading and why reading is important."
- All essays should be turned in to Ms. Haynes in the Media Center by Wednesday, January 29th. The essays will be judged and the winner will receive a prize.

On Tuesday, January 21st, we held our Scripps School Spelling Bee with 16 participants. Congratulations to Helen Vu, our school spelling champion! Kevin Gaskins, came in second place after five heated head-to-head rounds with Helen after the other participants had been eliminated. Helen will be competing in the OCPS Regional Qualifier on February 5th. We know she will represent Legacy Middle School well. Good luck, Helen! | | |

Parents, if you are interested in being a chaperone for Gradventure with our 8th graders, you must be approved as an ADDitions Volunteer for this school year. Let’s Read OCPS!, a district-wide reading challenge, will run from January 27 to April 30, 2025, and aims to encourage students to read for enjoyment and develop a lifelong love of reading by contributing to the district-wide goal of reading 20 million minutes.
About the Challenge
All OCPS students, employees, families, and community members are encouraged to participate in the Let’s Read, OCPS! challenge by individually reading at least 500 minutes throughout the challenge. Participants are encouraged to read whatever they choose for enjoyment and to log their minutes in Beanstack, a LaunchPad application that motivates and rewards students for reading.
How to Participate
Students and employees are encouraged to log their minutes in Beanstack, which can be found on LaunchPad, in the Library Research Tools folder. Students and employees can earn badges and view their progress throughout the challenge by opening the Let's Read, OCPS! challenge on the Beanstack Challenges page.

OCPS - Magnet Program Application Deadlines Coming Soon | | |
OCPS offers several dynamic and innovative Magnet Programs across our district for students to participate in. Families with students as young as Kindergarten can apply to participate in one of 41 programs offered at the elementary, middle and high school level.

To participate in one of these Magnet Programs families must apply. The application must be submitted electronically before the deadline of February 17, 2025, for consideration in the first lottery. Students must meet the eligibility requirements of the magnet(s) for which they are applying.
