We started quarter four this week and we are now less than one week away from B.E.S.T. Writing, which will take place on Tuesday, April 2. The B.E.S.T. Writing assessments are scored and reported on a 12-point rubric with the following domains: Purpose/Structure, Development, and Language. Each domain is worth four possible points. When results are reported, students will receive a raw score on the overall scale (12 points) and for each four-point domain. Our 6th graders will be showcase their knowledge on Expository writing (explains a topic using facts) and our 7th and 8th graders will demonstrate mastery on Argumentative writing (students are tasked with taking a position on an issue or topic with supporting evidence). Students have practiced identifying and applying their knowledge in crafting sound essays.
Families, it would be immensely helpful if you reviewed the structures and components of the test (as mentioned and linked up just above) with your child this week ahead of our B.E.S.T. Writing next Tuesday.
Report Card 3 will available for your review next Tuesday, April 2 on Skyward. We also have two more track meets this season!
Families, research shows that when schools successfully engage families, students earn higher grades, score higher on tests, develop better social skills, and are more likely to graduate. The Family-School Relationships Survey was developed at the Harvard Graduate School of Education to provide schools with a clear picture of family attitudes about several key topics.

We ask that you carve out a few minutes of your day and complete our Panorama Education Family Survey. Your input is very important to us. Thank you.

Mr. McGarvey and Ms. Nieves

Both Mr. McGarvey and Ms. Nieves were simultaneous winners of Phoenix Foundation of Central Florida Morning Glow program. Through their Morning Glow program, The Phoenix Foundation of Central Florida awards up to $100,000 per year in grants to music, dance, and theater teachers in Orange County, Florida. These grants are awarded biannually and may be used to supplement curriculum, purchase uniforms, provide construction materials, or anything else teachers in these departments see as a need to help their students.
Mr. McGarvey will purchase three new tubas and Ms. Nieves will purchase a 26 piece Florida Junior Thespian One Act Play Set. In total, our students will benefit from a combined $22,875 in grant funded generosity from the Phoenix Foundation to support our Performing Arts programs.

Shrinkflation 101: The Economics of Smaller Groceries
Have you noticed your grocery products shrinking? Here’s how that gets counted — and what gets missed — in the inflation reports our Legacy families hear about in the news.*
Companies are downsizing products without downsizing prices, and consumer posts from Reddit to TikTok to the New York Times comments section drip with indignation at the trend, widely known as “shrinkflation.”
Even if downsizing is not happening as often, shrinkflation today is having a big impact in a few key categories, including sweets, detergent and toilet paper.
From 2019 to 2023, shrinkage added about 3.6 percentage points to inflation for products like paper towels and toilet paper, up from 1.2 percentage points from 2015 to 2019. Shrinkflation has also contributed more heavily to price increases in both candy and cleaning products in recent years.
Making sense of the chart for Legacy families: The chart shows the ordinary inflation rate percentage from Jan. 2019 to Oct. 2023 and then the shrinkflation rate after adjusting for the fact that product packaging is getting smaller for many grocery store items. Notice the bottom line—household paper products—as an example. Without factoring in today's smaller packaging at higher prices, inflation is up +31.4% (blue dot), but when you consider that you are actually "getting less for more," then the true inflation rate has been 35.0% for paper products (brown dot).
* What is inflation? Inflation is a general increase in prices, which will cause a loss of purchasing power over time, meaning your dollar will not go as far tomorrow as it did today. It is typically expressed as the annual change in prices for everyday goods and services such as food, furniture, apparel, transportation and toys.

This Week's Motivational Moment!
Coasting is a Failing Formula
You can find examples of 'coasting' in sports, business, politics, entertainment and a dozen other places if you think about it. Coasting is essentially a human tendency to get complacent after success or when a large enough lead has been built up. A major problem with coasting whether it be at school, on the job, or even with your personal health, is that the unexpected will occur.
In school, if you have performed through three quarters of the year heading into the final stretch and some unforeseen resistance or problem pops up, you may find your situation changing for the worse rather quickly.
The best way to avoid any slippage is to maintain all the positive actions you have all along. For students this means daily attendance, keeping assignments current, consistently checking Skyward, taking advantage of tutoring when it is offered, and reviewing your personal goals which, hopefully, are written down where you can be reminded of them daily.
"Remember Jets, if you're coasting, you're going downhill."
With the final nine weeks of 2023-2024 underway, we ask that all of our Jets continue to put forth their best effort and never hesitate to ask for help if needed. Prohibit yourself from coasting and stay focused on your goals making each instructional day count!
