Jets in Action!
Legacy Community Brief
| |
Happy New Year, Legacy families! We hope you had an enjoyable Winter Break with your families.
Students have a fresh start this semester and should be encouraged to finish the second half of the year strong by completing assignments on time, taking tests seriously, and working to the best of their ability.
High School Counselor Visits
Later this month, University and East River High School Counselors will be visiting with our 8th grade students to provide information about the variety of classes offered next year.
Scripps School Spelling Bee
On January 21st, thirty of our top spellers will be competing in the Scripps School Spelling Bee. Let’s wish our talented spellers good luck!
Reading Challenge
Let’s Read, OCPS!, a district-wide reading challenge, is taking place from January 27th to April 30th, 2025. This challenge invites students and faculty to collectively read 20 million minutes. Students should individually aim to read at least 500 minutes. Research has shown that reading at least 20 minutes per day increases students’ exposure to vocabulary and improves comprehension. More information about the challenge can be found in this edition of JIA.
Personal Finance Education at Legacy
I am pleased to announce that Legacy Middle School is starting a new chapter in its course offerings, as well as enhancing our operations to provide students and families with a more robust experience.
Students in Teacher of the Year Ms. Fray’s first and second period class, are the first students in the entire state of Florida to have exposure to personal finance at the middle school level. This, ladies and gentlemen, is a game changer aimed at enhancing prosperity and changing the course of many in our community. When we all collectively ask why didn’t I learn finance in school, our 8th graders will be the first in Florida, the tip of the spear in changing the trajectory of their families financial future.
During these challenging economic times, we believe that it is imperative for students to begin learning the basics of finance, investing, and all things money. Students will eventually take a high school graduation requirement in financial literacy, but we believe that starting our Jets off on the right foot now will prepare them for success in their futures. Our vision is that when our eighth graders transition from middle school to high school, many of them will be of the age to find gainful part-time employment at locations such as Publix or Chick-fil-A. What a wonderful way to start there financial journey with the training, insights, and tutelage that we will provide them at Legacy Middle School!
Missing Student Work Communications
Additionally, thanks to the generosity of Orange County Public Schools’ office of Access and Opportunity, we are moving away from conventional method of communicating with families regarding missing work and automating the way in which we communicate when it comes to students having missing assignments. Ideally, this new program appropriately titled ‘ICU,’ will not be used frequently. Please encourage your children to review Canvas early and often.
I am looking forward to another great week on the flight deck!
Warm regards,
Jason Jiménez
Principal

Source: FRED Database (Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics Jobs Report from Jan. 10, 2025 - Table A-4 Read full report
Note: Lower unemployment percentages are generally viewed as more favorable. The grey bar and spike in the chart was the last US economic recession tied into Covid-19. Please notice how the basic unemployment pattern does not change in the long-run. Those with greater education in the U.S. typically experience less chance of joblessness.
