Course Overview:
Duties, Responsibilities and Mandatory Reporting for School Resource Officers:
The student will gain an understanding of duties and responsibilities of school resource officers in a changing legal landscape, including the importance of mandatory reporting responsibilities and collaboration with school administrators.
Threat Assessments and the School Resource Officer:
Attendees will gain an understanding and an overview of current laws regarding behavioral threat assessments in schools, along with the latest case law regarding the legal standards for threat assessments.
Search, Seizure and Miranda for School Resource Officers:
Participants will learn about the latest case law and legal standards regarding student searches and seizures. Students will also learn about the emergence of Miranda requirements and how it affects both SROs and administrators.
Importance of IDEA, Special Education and FERPA for SROs
This unit of instruction will provide SROs with the fundamentals of the Individuals with Disabilities Act and Special Education provisions and how it affects SROs. Students will also gain an understanding of the Family Educational Rights to Privacy Act, and how it affects SROs during investigations and collaboration with law enforcement agencies.
