Hello, LAWM friends!

We are knocking on wood as we type this, but springtime feels....close? In this spirit, our client story focuses on a fresh start for a mom and family. Also below:

  • A March 21 Spanish-language education event on renters' rights.
  • Great feedback from partner organizations on our recent "Donuts & The Law" program. We'll host another one this fall.
  • If it's (almost) springtime, it's tax time. While we don't do income tax prep, our Low Income Tax Clinic (LITC) provides free legal help to qualifying clients who have problems with the IRS.

We'll see you next month!

Keeping her home gave an abuse survivor

a stable place to make a fresh start

“Hallie” and her child were in danger. Hallie’s husband physically abused them, and with his outbursts worsening, Hallie knew that protecting herself and her child meant leaving the relationship. Hallie had sought help from one of our partner organizations—a social services agency serving domestic violence survivors—and our partner referred Hallie to us. We saw the immediate danger that Hallie faced, and we represented her to help end the abusive marriage.

During the divorce process, we dug in and fought for Hallie to keep her family home. She owned her home before the marriage and paid almost all housing expenses during the marriage. But her husband demanded a large sum of money from Hallie to keep the home. We made our case for Hallie in court. The result? The court said Hallie should keep her home by paying only a fraction of what the husband demanded.

Our attorney who handled the case says, “Hallie’s abusive ex-husband tried using the family home, and its value, as a form of control. We presented her story at trial and got a victory which empowered her for the future.”

You said it...!

Last month we hosted over 90 staffers from nonprofit partner organizations for our "Donuts and The Law" training program: family law basics for non-attorneys.

We were so happy to hear back from attendees who enjoyed the program (and the donuts)!

Tax time resources

Our Low Income Tax Clinic helps taxpayers obtain the money and benefits they deserve! Tom Toft, our LITC tax attorney (pictured right at a community group meeting) represents people who want to resolve tax problems with the IRS.

While we do not provide tax return preparation help, we do produce handouts like the ones below, explaining what taxpayers can do to help get their tax returns (and refunds) processed fast!
