"Anaiyah" manages to live on a very low income and has a Section 8 housing voucher that covers her rent every month. Anaiyah missed her lease renewal in 2025, which triggered a month-to-month rate and fee instead. The landlord sued Anaiyah for non-payment when those sums were not paid.
When Anaiyah missed a court hearing, she received a default judgement—for over $6,000. Unable to pay this sum, Anaiyah was about to be evicted. That would mean forfeiting her voucher and losing the ability to rent anywhere in future.
To avoid becoming homeless, Anaiyah borrowed $3,000 from a family member to pay some of the judgment amount. She also reached out to us. Our attorney worked with Anaiyah, the Housing Commission, and others to clarify the facts of the situation and reach a good settlement that kept Anaiyah in her home. Thanks to our attorney’s advocacy, the landlord agreed to dismiss the case, reset Anaiyah's balance to zero, put her rent back at the amount covered by the voucher, and refund half the amount she had paid.
Without an attorney in her corner, Anaiyah’s story would likely have ended very differently. With free legal help, her voice was heard, her rights upheld, and her home protected.
