Hello LAWM friends!

A large proportion of our work involves helping individuals - and kids - get safe from domestic abuse. Nora's story, featured below, is one of many such stories we could tell. It is an honor for our staff to be able to walk with clients through the legal process. Securing a just legal outcome enables survivors to move on with their lives, with dignity, safety, and fresh hope.

This month we also have resources for you to download and share on common family law questions like divorce and child custody, plus resources to help prevent utility shut-offs.

If there are particular topics you'd like to see us over in future, let us know! Thanks, as always, for your support. You make a real difference!

A fresh start for Nora, safe from her abuser

"Nora" came to Legal Aid for help ending a violently abusive marriage. Although she was financially dependent on her abuser, the abuse had finally gone too far and she had to flee her home to get safe. She was also raising a child with special needs, which required a great deal of her time and energy.

We represented Nora to help her end the marriage through a divorce and to divide the marital assets. With Legal Aid’s help Nora is starting a new chapter, free from domestic violence, and with enough financial resources for her and her child to live stably.

Resources: Divorce & Child Custody

Dividing marital property and determining child custody rights are two important parts of the divorce process. Custody hearings can also occur separately from divorce proceedings.

Here's our printable overview of property division and custody.

Also, our friends at Lakeshore Legal Aid made these easy-to-understand videos about child support, requesting supervised parenting time, and more.

Help with Utilities

Even though the weather is finally taking a turn for the better, many in our communities continue to face the threat of utility shut-offs. Here are some links to information about assistance and protections from the Michigan Public Service Commission:
