Hello, LAWM friends!

We hope you're staying cool and enjoying the summer. This month's newsletter highlights how LAWM and one of our volunteer attorneys helped "Colleen" to challenge an unfair loan contract. Also, here's a heads-up to our partners with nonprofit and government offices: this fall we'll host a "Donuts & The Law" professional education program just for you! Finally, please help circulate our Spanish-language flyer which explains our services and eligibility rules.

The newsletter will take a break in August and return in September. Wishing you all the best until then!

Colleen Gets Relief From an Unfair Loan

“Colleen” is a senior who lives with a disability and makes ends meet on a fixed income. She took a small loan to make car repairs and was shocked when the interest payments were well over 100%. She was making payments but falling behind, and she realized she may never be able to keep up with the loan.

We investigated and identified some complex business practices behind the loan. Fortunately, one of our pro bono program’s volunteers is a semi-retired consumer protection attorney. He consulted with our staff attorney, and then agreed to volunteer as Colleen’s lawyer.

By the time he finished, the interest, fees, and the remaining loan balance were waived. Colleen got the help she needed through a combination of our advocacy and a big assist from our pro bono lawyer.

Donuts & The Law - Back This Fall

Watch for more info later this summer about our fall Donuts & The Law events! The topic will be What Tenants Need to Know: Rights & Responsibilities in Landlord/Tenant Law.
