Hello, LAWM friends!
Let's begin with gratitude: we are grateful for the help and partnership of so many supporters - from other nonprofit agencies to donors, to foundation funders, to the courts, and to our clients, who we are privileged to represent. Thank you!
This month we'll share about:
- helping Leonard save his home
- reaching out to local communities and our partner nonprofits
- turning a cat into a spider
- needing your help to keep doing what we do
And we'll close with holiday wishes for your and yours.

A Senior Couple Keeps Their Home
|
Leonard and his wife are seniors on a fixed income and living below the poverty line. They came to us when they faced losing their home to an eviction. Leonard was certain that he paid the rent like clockwork. His landlord had a lawyer on their side. We represented Leonard to investigate and make sure his rights were protected.
With Leonard’s help we assembled financial records showing that, sure enough, he had consistently paid his rent. The problems were occurring on the landlord’s side, as property management and ownership had changed hands. The outcome: having a legal aid lawyer made the difference. We helped clear up the confusion, confirm Leonard’s rent payment records, and most importantly we helped Leonard keep his home.

Supervising Attorney, Aaron Bainbridge was out and about in Big Rapids this month, tabling at MiWorks! West Central's “Local Neighbors Resources & Assistance Expo” event.
Also, we heard from the nonprofit staffers who attended our "Donuts & the Law" education programs on landlord-tenant law. 100% of them said the program will help them serve clients more effectively! We are so happy about this, and we'll be back with more programming (and donuts!) in 2025!
We know it's Thanksgiving, but we can't resist rewinding to Halloween to show you the winners of last month's "Pets of LAWM" costume contest. Apparently the spider look is in. And who doesn't love a hot dog?

Our Thanksgiving wishes for you and yours...
|
May you, your loved ones, and your friends enjoy a peaceful holiday weekend. May we all remember how gratitude can energize us to show up and face each day as our best self. And in showing up each day, may we be unafraid to offer help, and to ask for it.
Happy Thanksgiving!
