Acquisition of King James Place

Real Estate Group partner, Neill Kalvin, and Real Estate Group law clerk, Helen Wright, acted on behalf of a separate account client of Northam Realty Advisors Limited, on the acquisition of King James Place, a boutique office building located at 133-135 and 143-145 King Street East, Toronto. Prominently situated along King Street East, across from St. James Cathedral and St. James Park, King James Place is the preeminent boutique office building in Downtown Toronto. Clad in traditional red brick that carefully complements the buildings’ original Victorian facade, King James Place is one of the most recognizable landmarks of Toronto’s original old town streetscape. King James Place has received numerous industry awards, including the BOMA Building of the Year (2008) and the prestigious Governor General’s Award for Architecture.

Litigation Group Emerges Victorious from a Five-Week Trial

On July 8, 2015, David Taub and Robert Choi of our Litigation Group won a $2.2 million (USD) judgment for Future Image Holdings Corporation, after a five-week trial in the Superior Court of Justice. In the matter of Future Image Holdings Corporation et al. v. Barefoot Science Technologies Inc. et al., 2015 ONSC 4432, Justice McIsaac awarded judgment to Future Image Holdings Corporation ("Future Image") and dismissed both the counterclaim and the third party claim made against Future Image, its affiliate, and the principal. This case arose from Future Image's multi-million dollar investment in Barefoot Science Holdings Inc. ("Barefoot Science"), whose principals represented to Future Image that the investment was secured by valuable insole technologies owned by Barefoot Science. In fact, the intellectual property was owned by Barefoot Science's subsidiary, and the inventor of the technologies fraudulently concealed documents that purported to give him certain reversionary interests and royalties. Justice McIsaac held that Barefoot Science's principal committed fraud and breached fiduciary duties, and the findings led the court to grant oppression remedies to Future Image pursuant to Ontario's Business Corporations Act.

The landmark 75 storey mixed-use condominium tower has been under construction for several years and is finally nearing completion. Edge of Acceptable: Terminating employees who post in poor taste
by Barbara Green

For many employers, the British Columbia Supreme Court’s recent decision of Kim v. International Triathlon Union will make them think twice about terminating an employee for his or her questionable use of social media.

The employee in question was a senior manager of communications at the International Triathlon Union (ITU) before she was terminated for a number of unprofessional and insubordinate social postings on social media. She argued she was wrongfully dismissed without cause or reasonable notice.

Interview with Errol H. Tenenbaum

How long have you been with Robins Appleby LLP?

I've been at the firm for 10 years.

What do you specialize in at Robins Appleby LLP?

I practice in the areas of tax law and estate and succession planning.

What characteristics do you think a person needs to be a successful Tax and Estate Planning Lawyer?

In order to properly assist clients with their tax and estate planning needs, a successful lawyer in this area must have both the necessary expertise and a firm understanding of the client's business. This helps ensure that the planning that is undertaken is appropriate for that client's specific situation.

What do you want our readers to know about Robins Appleby LLP?

Robins Appleby is a mid-sized firm doing big firm work. We have many years of experience providing expert advice on a variety of business and tax issues, and we take pride in developing long-term relationships with our clients to ensure that we continue to provide them with up-to-date advice as their needs evolve throughout the years.

How do you spend your spare time?

I love downhill skiing, and I've been doing a lot of running in the last year (and completed my first 10K in the spring). Ultimately, most of my spare time is spent with my wife and 4 year old son.

When I walk into your office for the first time, looking around, what would your office tell me about you?

I have a bulletin board covered with photographs of my family and pictures by my son – so someone would know that I take pride in my family and that I have an adorable and creative child who thoroughly enjoys drawing (but who, unfortunately, might not have a future as an artist).

How is that different from your personal life?

I try not to have as many files front and centre in my house. Otherwise, no difference – lots of pictures of my family.

What are you reading right now?

I don't always get a chance to read regularly, so I'm in-between books and I seem to alternate between heavy and quick reads. I haven't actually started it yet, but I was just given 'The Girl on the Train' by Paula Hawkins by my mother-in-law (which I'm guessing is in the 'quick read' category). The last book I read was The Hobbit.

If you met yourself in your first year of law school, what advice would you give him?

My undergraduate degree was in Political Science and I wasn't sure at the time if I wanted to practice law, so I actually think I would tell myself to stay the course... and pick a different roommate in first year, that guy was really weird.
