Legendary champions named as Ambassadors for 2020 Worlds


LAUSANNE (SUI), FIG Office, 11 February 2020:

This year once more, some of Gymnastics’ great champions of old will be taking up roles as Ambassadors at the World Championships. The FIG is delighted to announce the names of the three legends who will light up the Worlds with their presence and pass on their passion for sport to the next generation.

FIG President Morinari Watanabe commented: "Heroes have always made history in Gymnastics. Behind the medals, there are countless inspirational stories. By sharing their tales, our 2020 Gymnastics Ambassadors will help build bridges between generations as well as between Gymnastics disciplines."
16th Aerobic Gymnastics World Championships
Baku (AZE) – 14-16 May
Vladislav Oskner (RUS)
There is no doubting that Vladislav Oskner and his late wife Tatyana Solovieva marked the history of Aerobic Gymnastics with their class and their talent. Between 1995 and 2003, the Russian couple were a permanent fixture on the podium at every Worlds. Their domination of the Mixed Pair event reached its height in the period from 1997-2002 when they captured every major title – namely, four gold medals in the World Championships (1998, 1999, 2000 and 2002) and two at The World Games (1997 and 2001).  

Oana Corina Constantin (ROU)
She was one of the driving forces behind the strong Romania team of the 2010s. An all-rounder, she shone in every category, collecting a total of seven World Championship medals – four of them gold and three silver – together with four at The World Games - one gold and three silvers. It was in 2012 with her Team that she earned her first gold medal before, at the next Worlds in 2014, she triumphed with both the Trio and the Group. She concluded her career with the Individual gold in 2016.

Donghua Li (SUI) 
Switzerland’s last Olympic champion in Artistic Gymnastics, Donghua Li has a rare story to tell. At the age of 20 he chose to leave China, his home country, for love and settled in Switzerland. This decision had consequences as the doors of the China national squad were permanently closed to him and he had to wait five years to acquire Swiss nationality. When he finally took part in his first Worlds in Swiss colours in 1994, he won the bronze medal on the Pommel Horse. The next year, it was gold and then silver in 1996, a few months before his crowning moment in Atlanta where he became Olympic Pommel Horse champion.  
The FIG carries out the selection of the Ambassadors alongside the organising committee of the host country. The FIG’s Ambassadors’ Commission takes into consideration the wishes of the local organising committee together with several criteria such as a gymnast’s medals and the mark they made on the history of the sport, as well as their renown in the host country. The final choice is then submitted to the FIG Executive Committee for final approval.

It is the oldest established international federation of an Olympic sport and has participated in the Olympic Games since their revival in 1896. The FIG governs eight sports: Gymnastics for All, Men's and Women's Artistic Gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Trampoline - including Double Mini-trampoline and Tumbling -, Aerobics, Acrobatics, and Parkour. De grands champions nommés ambassadeurs pour les Mondiaux 2020

Cette année encore, des grands champions joueront les ambassadeurs aux Championnats du monde de gymnastique. La FIG a le plaisir de dévoiler les noms des trois légendes qui illumineront les Mondiaux par leur présence et transmettront leur passion du sport aux jeunes générations.

«L'histoire de la gymnastique est faite de héros», a déclaré le Président de la FIG, Morinari Watanabe. «Derrière les médailles, il y a toujours des histoires personnelles qui donnent matière à réfléchir. En partageant ces moments de leur vie, nos Ambassadeurs de la gymnastique 2020 contribueront à jeter les ponts entre les générations et les différentes disciplines.» 
16es Championnats du monde de gymnastique aérobic
Bakou (AZE) – 14-16 mai
Vladislav Oskner (RUS)
Vladislav Oskner et sa femme Tatyana Solovieva – disparue depuis – ont indéniablement marqué par leur classe et leur talent l’histoire de l’aérobic. De 1995 à 2003, le couple russe est monté sur tous les podiums en duos mixtes aux Mondiaux. Leur domination a atteint son apogée entre 1997 et 2002, période où ils se sont emparé de tous les titres majeurs, à savoir quatre médailles d'or aux Championnats du monde (1998, 1999, 2000 et 2002) et deux aux Jeux Mondiaux (1997 et 2001).

Elle fut l’une des forces motrices de la solide équipe roumaine des années 2010. Polyvalente, elle brilla dans toutes les catégories, récoltant au total 7 médailles en Championnats du monde dont quatre en or et trois d’argent, et 4 médailles aux Jeux Mondiaux, dont une en or et trois d’argent. C’est en 2012 par équipe, qu’elle savoura son premier sacre. Aux Mondiaux suivants en 2014, elle décrocha deux titres avec le trio et le groupe et conclut sa carrière sur l’or en individuel en 2016. 
27es Championnats du monde de gymnastique acrobatique

D onghua Li (SUI)
Le dernier Suisse champion olympique de gymnastique artistique en date a une histoire pour le moins singulière. C’est par amour qu’à 20 ans, Donghua Li décide de quitter la Chine, son pays natal, pour la Suisse. Ce choix a des conséquences: les portes de l’équipe chinoise se ferment à jamais et cinq années passent avant qu’il puisse obtenir la nationalité suisse. Quand enfin, sous les couleurs helvétiques, il prend part à ses premiers Mondiaux en 1994, il gagne la médaille de bronze au cheval d’arçons. L’année suivante, ce sera l’or, puis l’argent en 1996, quelques mois avant la consécration à Atlanta en 1996, où il s’adjuge le titre olympique aux arçons.
La sélection des Ambassadeurs est faite par la FIG en collaboration avec le comité d'organisation du pays hôte. La Commission des Ambassadeurs de la FIG prend en considération les souhaits exprimés par le comité d’organisation local, ainsi que plusieurs critères, tels que le palmarès, l’empreinte qu’ils ont laissée dans l’histoire de la gymnastique et leur notoriété dans le pays hôte. Le choix final est ensuite sujet à l’aval du Comité exécutif de la FIG.
