With the completion of the 54th Sons of the American Legion National Convention, new officers have taken their positions at the national level. The new National Commander is Thom Skelly from the Detachment of Texas, and the Mid-West Region National Vice Commander Casey Hanson is from the Detachment of South Dakota. Mike Monserud is now the leading candidate for National Commander for 2027–2028. Iowa was able to bring home a few awards from the National Convention: Highest Per Capita Donation for the Mid-West Region to the National Emergency Fund, 90% of Membership Goal by National Convention, and two Snapshots of Service awards for Washington Squadron 29. Commander Johnson is taking Candidate Mike’s theme of “Membership Through Mentorship” to heart. He brought his Squadron Sergeant-at-Arms, Gryffin Dawson, to the National Convention. Gryffin is * years old, and with the help of his mother, Commander Johnson, and Sally Johnson, he got a picture with either a Legionnaire or SAL member from 48 states, as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and France.

The Detachment also made a $1,000 donation to the Veterans and Children Foundation. Past Detachment Commander Honse and Commander Johnson, along with all the Iowa Sons members on the ride, presented the check to David Heredia, the National Riders Chair, in Ames as the National Legacy Ride stopped for the first night of the ride.
