Legislative Update

This week, learn how you can help the children seeking refuge by crossing our nation's border, and urge Congress to invest in employment training. Remember, elected officials will be at home for a whole month in August, a prime time to set up lobby visits with your community. Your elected officials need to hear from people like you. Let us know if you will schedule a lobby visit in August.
Unaccompanied minors are fleeing violence and need protection by the United States. Educate Congress about their needs.
Five Ways to Help Unaccompanied Minors Crossing the US-Mexico Border

Many members of the NETWORK community have been asking for ways to help address the humanitarian crisis that is causing record numbers of immigrant children and families to make the treacherous journey from Central America to the United States. We wanted to let you know of a few options:

1. Find them shelter. The Administration has told us that there is a desperate need for safe facilities to provide shelter for children until they can be discharged to a sponsor to await judicial proceedings. Read the letter from FEMA and facilities requirements, in case you know of a place that may be suitable.

2. Advocate for them with Congress. Ask for additional funding for the Office of Refugee Resettlement, and insist that we protect these childrenShare these alerts with your friends, and ask them to take action as well.

3. Schedule a lobby visit with your member of Congress during the August Recess to talk more about this issue.

4. Seek out local opportunities with organizations like Catholic Charities, the San Diego Immigrant Rights Consortium, or other groups working with unaccompanied minors or other refugees and asylum seekers to volunteer or provide much-needed donations of items to provide for children and families.

5. Share your story! Tell us what your experiences are working with vulnerable populations and the unaccompanied minors. We are eager to share stories with our contacts in Congress and the Administration. Email us at networkupdate@networklobby.org.

Tell Congress: Investing in Employment Training Helps the 100%

Youth Employment Training
The Workforce Investment Act (H.R. 803) will help equip young people for the modern workforce.
Email Congress about it!
On June 25 the Senate reauthorized the Workforce Investment Act (S. 1356) for three years. This is a strong bi-partisan statement, 95-3 vote. The legislation

Now, the legislation is being considered in the House. H.R. 803 is on the agenda Wednesday, July 9. We need to ensure that it passes smoothly, by a wide margin. This could be the first significant legislation to go to the President in a long time!

Call or email your representative as soon as possible. Urge him/her to vote yes on a bill without additional amendments. Also, please thank your senators for the unusual bi-partisan support that has been shown for this bill.
