The Legislative Session has kicked into high gear with six days remaining until the session ends at noon on February 17, 2022. During this time bills can move quickly through committees or at a snails pace, it all depends.

We want to THANK everyone again who responded to our Call-to-Action against HB158 - Real Estate Transfer Taxes & Social Security. We have been monitoring and there has been no movement out of the House Public Affairs Committee and we hope this means the bill has stalled!

Other bills of interest this week are HB65/a - Housing Modernization passed the House with amendments. We were able to push for changes, but we still oppose aspects of this bill and will keep you posted as this bill moves to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

We also have been watching the progress on HB69/a - Create Crime of Operating a Chop Shop, this bill deals with one of NMAR's priorities against copper theft and supporting legislation that penalizes theft of regulated materials. HB69/a passed the House with a 62-5 vote and is waiting to be introduced to the Senate.

Last night, the Senate, Tax Business & Transportation Committee approved a Committee Substitute for SB5/44/49/108 called the Omnibus Tax Bill that proposes to eliminate the tax on Social Security income for low and moderate income New Mexican's and reduce the state's gross receipts tax rate from 5.125% to 4.875%.

As we get closer to the end of the session it's important to watch for e-mails that ask for your attendance at committee hearings or to contact legislators to express your concerns. Keep in mind that although committees have scheduled times, those are contingent on when the House and Senate adjourn from their respective chambers.

We continue to advocate on your behalf and will keep you posted as we move into the final stretch of the session.
