Legislative amendments would require Code of Conduct consideration
The Government of BC introduced legislative amendments to the Community Charter, Vancouver Charter and Local Government Act that would require local governments to consider adopting or updating a Code of Conduct within 6 months after their first regular council or regional district board meeting. This proposed new requirement responds to a resolution (SR3) that was endorsed by the UBCM membership at the 2021 convention.
Implementation of RCMP body worn cameras
Consistent with the Prime Minister’s 2020 commitment to enhance transparency, accountability and trust in police, the RCMP is moving forward to equip its members with body worn cameras (BWC). Implementing BWCs will have financial impacts for local governments. UBCM has been involved in this process through participation on a Public Safety Canada working group. Read more

Rail proximity guidelines questionnaire

Local governments are invited to complete a brief survey to indicate awareness and use of rail proximity guidelines. The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and the Railway Association of Canada (RAC) are preparing to update the guidelines for 2023, and are seeking input to identify areas for improvement and change.
