LEGISLATORS ATTACK PARENTS RIGHTS
Dear friends,
In Wednesday's House Judiciary Committee, legislators passed HB7, the bill that makes New Mexico an abortion and transgender free for all. Only four legislators stood in opposition of the bill and supported NMFAM's argument of the parent's rights issue created by the bill. The bill will now go to the House Floor for a final vote.
If the bill is passed on the House floor, this bill will strip parents of their rights in making sensitive medical decisions for their children in regards to the services outlined in this bill.
According to this bill, public school faculty and staff can now lead a child in a direction of care (ie. abortion or gender transitioning) without informing the parent. Rep. Ryan Lane specifically asked the sponsors, "Does this bill apply to an 8-year-old?" The bill's sponsor did not want to answer clearly. Thanks to the persistent question by Rep. Lane, the sponsor finally said "yes." This bill applies to an 8-year-old and the parents do not have to be informed.
The legislators who voted for this bill have clearly said that parents' rights don't matter. Somehow they believe that the state knows our children better than we do. Parents across New Mexico, no matter party affiliation, should be enraged at the audacity of legislators who are directly impinging the rights of parents to care for their children and make decision with and for their children.
We believe in helping families thrive, but legislators and public officials are set on tearing the family down. Not only is HB7 the most radical abortion and gender transitioning bill we've ever seen, it is a direct and blatant slam on a parent's right and responsibility to care for their child.
We cannot sit back in silence. Legislators need to hear from parents all over the state that we will not stand for this. With the myriad of other critical issues this bill presents, it is detrimental to New Mexico. It is detrimental to the family unit, to life, and to freedom.
The bill is currently on the House temporary calendar which means it could be moved to the house floor at any time. We must act now! To send a message to all legislators in the House, click here. If you would like to make a phone call or send an additional email to the moderate democrat legislators, please use the contact info below to urge them to vote NO on HB7. We must be loud and clear that New Mexico families oppose this bill!
Thank you for standing firm with us for families in New Mexico!
