GOV. ABBOTT CALLS LEGISLATORS BACK TODAY FOR THE 3RD SPECIAL SESSION

Private school vouchers, border security, banning private employer COVID vaccine mandates on the call

Gov. Greg Abbott has issued the call for the third Special Session of 2023, which began 1 pm MON Oct 9. today. Since the Regular Session ended May 29, the two Special Sessions in the summer dealt with property tax relief. For the third Special Session, Gov. Abbott has placed “school choice” and “education freedom” on the call. This would create “education savings accounts” or taxpayer funds to pay for private school tuition and books. He has also directed lawmakers to “do more to reduce illegal immigration” by passing laws creating a criminal offense for entering Texas illegally and other immigration priorities. Also, he included a call to prohibit private employers from mandating COVID-19 vaccines.

If after 30 days the Legislature fails to pass measures on these items, the Governor says he will call them back for a 4th Special Session to begin in November.
