Fair Districts News - Legislature Wraps up Hearings on Congressional Redistricting
Dear Friends,

THANK YOU to all the League members and Fair Districts volunteers for sharing your local stories with the Ohio Legislature's Congressional Redistricting Work Group!

The legislative work group held their second public hearing on congressional redistricting on the evening of Wednesday, November 1, and the room was once again packed with Fair Districts supporters.

Check out photos and highlights of the testimony on the Fair Districts blog.

Rich Exner, the reporter behind Cleveland.com's excellent redistricting series Out of Line: Impact 2017 and Beyond provides coverage of the hearing, "Ohio legislators say gerrymandering needs to be fixed, but will they act?"

It was truly heartwarming to hear from so many Fair Districts volunteers from across the state about why they are giving their time to this effort and how people in their community respond. Watch some of the video if you have time, because they were fantastic.

The volunteers' stories were what made both hearings successful. It showed the legislature it's not just good government organizations that care about this issue, but  real people from all walks of life are fed up with rigged districts.

And it was wonderful to see so many Leaguers in the room - from Licking County, Clermont, Mercer, Canton, Greater Cleveland, Athens. A regular LWV meet up!

What's next? We keep the pressure on the legislature by showing them we won't quit until we have real reform! Here's how you can help.

  1. Contact your state Rep and Senator. We need to reinforce the message we sent the working group by letting each of our legislators know that we expect the Work Group to take all the public input they received and work with us to craft meaningful reform that puts an end to congressional gerrymandering.
  2. Submit a letter to the editor of your local paper calling on the legislature to pass real reform. The public hearings provide excellent examples of how to frame your message - point to how gerrymandering has impacted your community.
  3. Keep collecting petition signatures! Early voting this weekend and Election Day next Tuesday are great opportunities to talk with voters about Fair Districts. Sign up here
