2024 legislative session comes to a close with vetoes overridden, bills finalized

The final two days of the 2024 General Assembly’s regular session, April 12 and 15, saw a flurry of activity as the Republican supermajorities in both chambers worked to not only pass bills but to override all of Gov. Andy Beshear’s vetoes that were issued during the veto period.

Please join KACo April 30, at 2 p.m. EDT for a virtual membership briefing on new laws that will impact counties. Register here.

Through the fire: McLean County celebrates opening of new senior center

Under a crystal blue sky and bright sunshine on a Saturday afternoon in McLean County, a crowd gathered in downtown Calhoun and cheered as Judge/Executive Curtis Dame cut the ribbon on the brand-new McLean County Community and Senior Citizens Center.

The scene on April 13, 2024, was very different from the night of Dec. 9, 2020, when a fire broke out at the senior center. The 6,000-square foot building was completely destroyed.

Fortunately, the McLean County senior center was covered by the KACo All Lines Fund.

This week in pictures

It was a beautiful spring day at the Madison County Joint Information Center for a KACo Leadership Institute class. Thanks to Madison County for hosting us!

Washington County officials helped celebrate a ribbon cutting for the Lincoln Trail Health Department building this week following several updates to the facility. The lower level also is the new home for Washington County 911 dispatchers.

Farmington Elementary School 5th grade students participated in a field trip to the Graves County government offices, learning about local government and other related topics. They ended the day at Kess Creek Park, where the sheriff’s office treated students to ice cream.

Mercer County Road Department staff, magistrates and judge/executive office staff participated in a clean-up week at Anderson Dean Park.

Hardin County officials participated in a Chiefs Roundtable for the Leadership Hardin County Class, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce. Several excellent questions were presented to law enforcement representatives by this group of community leaders. District Judge Kimberly Shumate moderated the roundtable.

The Great Crossing High School softball team in Scott County recognized first responders at a recent home game with GCHS Resource Officer Ben Martin and K9 Ollie throwing out the first pitch.

Stronger Counties. Stronger Kentucky.
