This Week at Christ Church
Ash Wednesday
Tomorrow - February 17
Lent begins tomorrow with Ash Wednesday. This year there will be one service at 6:oo p.m. on Zoom. A Lenten delivery is coming your way that will include not only ashes but all you'll need to participate in services, programs, and offerings during Lent. We might not be together as we have been in the past but this Lenten season there will be numerous ways for you to participate in the Lenten journey.
Stations of the Cross
Fridays afternoons at 12:00 noon
What do you know about the Stations of the Cross? The Way of the Cross or Stations of the Cross is a devotion to the Passion of Christ which recalls a series of events at the end of Jesus' life from his condemnation to his burial. The Way of the Cross imitates the practice of visiting the places of Jesus' Passion in the Holy Land by early Christian pilgrims - The Episcopal Church. The "stations" are depicted by small plaques that grace the walls of Christ Church during Lent. They were loving donated by parishioner Chuck Howe.

Join the Daughters of the King at 12:00 noon each Friday in Lent for a virtual walk through the Stations of the Cross on YouTube.

No matter how we try there is always something thing that slips by us - the Lent brochure shows the Stations of the Cross on Wednesday at 12:00 noon - the correct day is Fridays at 12:00 noon beginning this February 19.
Worship this Week
Online via Zoom
We hope you'll use the Zoom link to join us in worship this first Sunday in Lent. Share the link with friends and family so they may attend regardless of their time zone!

Remember - you may use the same Zoom link to attend Thursday morning's Healing Service at 10:00 a.m. as well. Visit our Worship page on the Christ Church website for links to all worship opportunities.
Lent at Christ Church
Listening in Lent
Lent 2021
Our Lenten focus this year is on LISTENING:

  • listening to God
  • listening to each other
  • listening to learn
  • listening to love

As we lean into this last stretch of isolation during our prolonged season of the pandemic, we invite you to use this time of quiet and quarantine productively by turning your listening ear to God and to each other. Now is our opportunity to discern who we are and where we are headed. Our Lenten time of reflection and listening will prepare us for rebuilding ourselves, our church, and our society come Eastertide.
Listening In Lent Speaker Series
Wednesday evenings on Zoom
Listen to God through others to learn and to love through our Listening in Lent Speaker Series. Each week our series will feature a different speaker from the wider Church and beyond to help us to hear God's message to us right now. Our time together will be interactive and engaging as we listen to God through others.

We are thrilled to announce that The Rev. Dr. Scott Stoner, the founder of the Living Compass Spirituality & Wellness Initiative will inaugurate our Lent Speaker Series. Joining us on Zoom, March 24 at 6:00 p.m. PT, live from the Midwest, Dr. Stoner will speak with us about Listening with All Your Heart, Soul, Strength, and Mind, also the title of his Lenten devotional.
Soup at Home
Wednesday "Soup Suppers"
One of the treasured pieces of our annual Lent programming is the soup supper that greets us as we walk through the doors of Hinde Hall. The opportunity to share a simple meal (delicious homemade soup, crusty bread, a smear of butter) invites us into the program for that evening.

This year, we invite you to savor that same offering in your own home by utilizing the recipe cards included in the Listening in Lent care package. These recipes, lovingly created by Christ Church parishioners, are sure to be just the thing to connect you to your Christ Church family each Wednesday evening. We hope you enjoy them, and we hope you will join us beginning February 24 at 6:00 p.m. on Zoom for the evening's speaker and conversation. Feed your body and then your soul.
Soup Delivery!
Wednesdays Soup at Home
As part of our Wednesday Lenten programming, we’re encouraging folks to enjoy soup for dinner at home like we usually do as a group during non-pandemic times. If you’re at a point where cooking is difficult for you, sign up to have soup delivered to you every Wednesday during our programming (February 24 – March 31). We’re also looking for soup makers who can commit to delivering soup to a fellow parishioner on those Wednesdays. If you need soup or want to make soup, contact Sarah Shealy Stump ([email protected]; 619-200-6408) to sign up! Reach out by February 21 so we can be ready to deliver on February 24.
Letting Go in Lent
Service Ministry/Thrift Shop
We live in abundance, but there are many in our community who do not. This Lenten season, Service Ministry and the Thrift Shop invite you to practice Letting Go in Lent and parting with items in your household—coats, sweaters, vases, pots & pans, etc.—that you no longer need so they may be put to good use again.

From Ash Wednesday to Good Friday, find one item each day and ask God if you can let it go. Listen for God’s response. As you put the item in a bag destined for the Thrift Shop, think of the person who will joyfully discover it and the countless others who will be helped by the Thrift Shop’s gracious outpouring of funds.

Collect your items in a bag and once a week or so, drop them off at the Thrift Shop (Tuesday-Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m). If you live in Coronado and need a hand getting your donations to the shop, contact Sarah Shealy Stump - (619-435-4527) and she’ll arrange for a Service Ministry contactless porch pickup! If you live in San Diego, call AmVets (877-990-8387) to schedule a pickup.

You will experience the empty tomb of Easter with a lighter heart and a less cluttered home after Listening and Letting Go in Lent!
A Call to LIstenng
Listen to Learn = Listen to Love
In your call to listening, we invite you to reach out to others with an actual phone call. Use this checklist to broaden your call-list during this Lenten season. As you listen, you just might hear God speaking to you through friend and neighbor. For instance, call to listen to someone...
  • ...who is helpful
  • ...you don't know very well
  • ...who needs your prayers
  • ...you used to sit by in church
  • ...who is grieving
  • ...you admire
  • ...who shares your ministry
  • ...who is over 80 years old

Maybe make a call to:
  • a family member
  • a family member's friend or a friend's family member
Lent for Families
Lent at Home Kit
Worship as a family
After dinner each Sunday, families are invited to journey with Jesus through scripture, prayer, and reflection. Kits were picked up on Sunday, February 14th. If you did not get one but would like one for your family or one to mail to loved ones, please contact Charlette Preslar,
Children Chapel
Sundays at 9:00 a.m. via Zoom
Praying with the Psalms - We will use our bodies and hearts to listen deeply, share our connections, and ultimately write our own psalm. For younger children, we invite families to participate together in this weekly offering. Contact Charlette Preslar if you'd like to be added to the family contact list and receive the Zoom link.
Holding Lent
Tuesdays 6:30 p.m. via Zoom
A Tangible Prayer Journey for Teens - Youth in grades 6-12 will spend the Lenten season experiencing the Divine in new ways. Toolkits will include prayer journals, prayer beads, Visio Divina cards, and more! Contact Charlette Preslar if your teen would like to participate but is not currently on the youth contact list.
Family Book Study
Conversation and creative activities
Only a fool is not afraid.
Mrs. Whatsit, A Wrinkle in Time

Listening to a good story is one of the first ways we learn to listen. During Lent, families are invited to read A Wrinkle in Time together. We will gather on Zoom four times during Lent for conversation and creative activities related to the book.
Contact Charlette Preslar if you haven't received a book or information on the book study but would like to participate.
Studies and Discussion Groups
Diocesan Lenten Book Study
Beginning Wednesday February 24
Did you know that God calls us as individuals and as the church to mitigate climate change? More than ever before, people of faith are called to pray, learn, and act for creation care! The Episcopal Diocese of San Diego invites you to a virtual Lenten study of the book Climate Church, Climate World: How People of Faith Must Work for Change by Jim Antal (www.jimantal.com).

This five-week series will take place on Wednesday evenings during Lent, February 24-March 24, 7:00-8:00 p.m. Discussion sessions will be facilitated by clergy and leaders from St. Paul’s Cathedral, Camp Stevens, St. Luke’s, St. Timothy’s, and St. Margaret’s. You will also have the opportunity to watch the recorded discussions at a later time.

Participants are asked to purchase the book on their own. You will receive a free study guide once you register. Learn more details and register here
Peace & Justice Ministry Film
Discussion for Black History Month
The Peace & Justice Ministry invites all to view a free presentation of the film Backs Against the Wall: The Howard Thurman Story. This one-hour film explores the life of Howard Thurman, author of Jesus and the Disinherited, who promoted non-violent protest for social change. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. regularly attended Thurman’s services and carried Thurman’s writings with him on the historic marches to Selma and Birmingham.

Watch the film prior to February 25th at this link. Then join a Zoom discussion hosted by St. Bart’s Episcopal Church on Thursday, February 25, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Zoom meeting ID: 819 0489 1448 Passcode: Stbarts60
Parish Office Closure
Enhanced safety for staff
Our offices are closed per State of California orders. This means that only staff may be in the building. There is a basket with bulletins and formation resources by the front door, so don't hesitate to stop by to make a pick-up! However, we will be unable to let anyone inside. The phone will continue to be answered during office hours from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and all of the staff may be reached via email! In a pastoral emergency, you may contact Mtr. Regan Schutz (503) 915-5755 or Deacon Tom Morelli (619) 838-3218. Here is a link to our contact page.
