What purpose does fasting serve in Lent?
Fasting has long been upheld in Christianity as a practice that helps us to disrupt habits or attachments that consume our focus in order to reorient that focus on God. In our world where so much vies for our attention, fasting helps us to come back to what is really important. “One does not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” This Lent, consider what habits or attachments could use some tempering in your own life in order to make space for God. What can you say ‘no’ to in order to say ‘yes’ to God?

Surprise! Neighbors! When Jesus is asked by a lawyer, “Who is my neighbor?” he responds with one of the most well-known stories in the New Testament: The Parable of the Good Samaritan. Yet, through this story, Jesus shows that neighborliness is not so much based on who, but how. We become neighbors to one another when we become aware of one another’s needs, when we are moved to action on another’s behalf, and when we show compassion toward each other’s frailty, regardless of who they are. How are you being called to be a neighbor today?
God of the stranger, you have given us to each other so we do not need to go about life alone. Give us courage to become neighbors to one another, and humility to allow others to be neighbors to us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Pastor Trudy celebrates nine years at Geneva Lutheran Church
|
Nine years ago on February 15, Pastor Trudy was installed as the pastor at GLC by Pastor Hector Garfias-Toledo along with then council president, Karen Desens. In the service, Julie Slifka gave the children’s message in the form of interviewing our new pastor. We remember PT saying she wanted to be a pastor from a young age – she would preach to the cows on her family farm!
All kidding aside, Pastor Trudy means the world to so many people in so many ways. We believe God brought her to us and feel that she was always meant to be at GLC. We are so grateful for her service, leadership, love, and laughter! #generouslifeinChrist
