The Mystery of Easter: A Journey Through Lent

Beginning Next Sunday, March 9th

Lent is the season when we prepare for the great Mystery of Easter, when Jesus died on the cross, was buried, and, on the third day, rose again. All God’s children, 0-99+, are welcome to participate in a special time of storytelling, wonder, play, and feasting between the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services for five Sundays (March 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th, and April 6th) as we reflect on Jesus’ birth and ministry in preparation for Easter.

What is Godly Play? Godly Play is a curriculum of contemplative spiritual practice, which explores the mystery of God’s presence in our lives. Rather than rely on critical thinking it invites people of all ages and abilities to encounter God in the world around us, in Scripture, and through “play,” or the use of our imaginations. This accessible yet profound practice teaches us to hear what God is saying in our lives and to make authentic and creative responses to God’s call.

Lenten Grief Group: “The Pain, Paradox, and Possibilities of Grief”

Beginning Next Sunday, March 9th

Grief is as individual as our fingerprints. But even if the circumstances surrounding the death of a loved one are different, there are similarities in the grief’s dimensions and demands on the healing path. The Lenten grief group will be led by Rev. Laura Palmer and meet from 4-5pm on the 5 Sundays in Lent, beginning on Sunday, March 9th, in the Houston Room. The group will be limited to six participants. Please email Rev. Laura Palmer: lpalmer@stmartinec.org, or call: 267-418-0123 if you would like to be included.

Lenten Quiet Day

Saturday, March 15th

12:00 - 4:00 pm in the Houston Room, with lunch included

Led by the Rev. Dr. Mary Barber

The Psalms and Job: Bringing our whole selves to God

We will read from and experience these Wisdom texts as we ponder questions about the meaning of suffering, how we pray to God, and how God responds to us. There will be some silent break time included. No prior reading or preparation is needed, just bring a pen and diary/journal. Registration for this event has closed.

Lenten Retreat at Holy Cross Monastery

Friday, March 21st - Sunday, March 23rd

Facilitated by the Rev. Dr. Mary Barber

Click here to register and learn more.

Registration is open for our Lenten Retreat at Holy Cross Monastery in West Park, New York. The theme this year is Old Testament Voices. We will dive into some of the big stories of the Hebrew Bible, looking at texts written by different authors and texts that were edited over time. We will consider what was happening for the people of God when these stories were written, and look at some contemporary takes on these texts. What does the Bible say about God, and about us? And where do we find ourselves in these stories today? Please register by Friday, March 7th.

And More!

In addition to the above Lenten programming, please be sure to save the date for other events hosted throughout the period of Lent by our various ministries and partners. Stay tuned for more information in Field Notes and mark your calendars for:
