CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES RICE BOWL | During this holy time, we are called to pause and pay closer attention to our relationship with God and our neighbors. Reflect on how the Lenten pillars of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving can guide your journey and how the Eucharist helps us to live in solidarity with our sisters and brothers around the world. WHAT IS YOUR PLAN FOR YOUR LENTEN JOURNEY THIS YEAR? |
Do you need some thoughts?
- Add one or more Mass to your week.
- Come to Stations of the Cross/Soup Night every Friday during Lent.
- Spend some quiet time with Christ in the Adoration Chapel.
- Join a Bible study, or use a reflection guide with your family or friends. The Archdiocese of Seattle created a five-week small group reflection guide, Encounter, which includes Scripture readings, prayer, and reflection. The Parish office has copies to share or you can print one from here.
- Check out a new form of Catholic Media—watch The Chosen, read a spiritual book (we have a number of good choices in the Narthex or ask the staff for suggestions), check out Sacred Heart Radio (they will be at SJV the first weekend of Lent), check out a podcast—Bishop Robert Barron and Fr. Mike Schmitz have good ones. The Archdiocese website has lots of suggestions with links here.
- Spend time serving others—the food banks need volunteers as does the St. Vincent de Paul store in Kenmore, look to using your passion or your expertise to service seniors at the Bothell Senior Center. Even a one-time volunteering can help. If you are looking to volunteer as a family or with your kids: SJV will have the Spring Grounds Clean Up on March 23, come make the grounds shine for Easter! Or, join us to make lunches for the homeless on the first Thursday of every month.

READINGS FOR THE FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT
PRACTICE OF HOPE
The flood that covered the earth mirrored the evil that had spread across it. Such sin still permeates the earth and can feel overwhelming.
- Reflect on the promise God made to Noah and the earth. What promise can you make back to God? In what specific, concrete ways can you care for the earth and its inhabitants?
- During his time in the desert, Jesus committed himself to opposing evil in all its forms. Schedule a time to go to confession this week. Acknowledge the ways you have ignored opportunities to make life-giving choices.
- Celebrate God's gift of creation by spending time in nature or learning more about a particular species or ecosystem.
We are doing our best to continue to provide a safe space to worship for everyone. Click here to see current COVID safety measures.
Live Stream Mass will now be during the Sunday 9:00am Mass.

| |
Sacred Heart Radio is our local, listener-supported Catholic radio station, a source for faithful Catholic voices in the Northwest. You’ll find inspiration, education and motivation 24 hours a day. They provide national programming from EWTN Radio as well as original, local programming. Try adding something new to your day this Lent. Pray with them, reason with them, laugh and learn with them.

| |
Join us for an educational and inspiring opportunity for ALL parishioners at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Kirkland. Lunch Included!

Highlights:
- Rare Diseases are more common than cancer and AIDS combined.
- 1 in 8 Americans will have a rare disease at some point in their lives.
- There are over 10,000 rare diseases.
- Over 240 new rare diseases are identified each year.
Be Inspired, Support, Connect, and Discover how you can support others and explore the resources available in our community. Let's come together, learn, and uplift one another. All Are Welcome! We look forward to seeing you there!

Thank you! Wow! What a gift to honor our younger couples with a fabulous and fun-filled night! Laughter and love just go together, and couples were reminded of the Love of God and presence of the Holy Spirit that drew them together! Thank you to everyone who came and got to know other couples in the parish and celebrated their love for their spouse! Thank you to the Cana Commission for using their gifts to honor and support the Sacrament of Marriage in our parish. Thank you to our Babysitters! It could not have happened without your loving kindness and care to our children.
The Lunar New Year is a celebration of the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year. This is the year of the Dragon, which represents strength and power! We are grateful for those who helped sing the song Ly Rượu Mừng, especially Quinn Tran, and for those who helped with and brought food to share for the reception, especially Chị Bach Yen and Mợ Hằng who helped to organize. Wishing everyone abundant blessings and graces! Joy and Happiness! Prosperity and Wealth! May God bless you!
Please pray for our youth in leadership and adult Youth Leaders. May the Holy Spirit fill their hearts with fire to bring back to the SJV community.
Because of your generous support of the Annual Catholic Appeal, we received a rebate that is being used to send some of the youth in leadership from our parish to the Religious Education Congress in Anaheim, California this week.
We are also providing scholarships to active parish youth to go to CYO summer camp. Thank you to all who have paid AND continue to pay their Annual Catholic Appeal pledge!

WHAT WILL HFK LOVE ABOUT SJV?
Let us know on a heart in the narthex!
| |
St. John Vianney will be partnering with Holy Family Kirkland. All of Kirkland will be united under one parish – let us pray that we will be the “Light on Finn Hill” to all of Kirkland.
Please visit archseattle.org/partners for more information about this process, and be involved in all the discussions as we move forward.
Upcoming Key Dates:
Spring 2024 – Pastors and parochial vicars announced.
July 2024 – Parish families, under the leadership of one pastor, will begin.
From Fr. Vu:
I believe in God, and also believe that the church is a positive force in the world. I’d like to continue to focus on the positive values that we provide as a Faith Community (with the grace of God), through Liturgy and prayer, Faith Formation and Education, Outreach, and Communal Life.
| |
During this month of love, let us celebrate all the positive things at SJV! In the Narthex, you’ll find hearts to write the things Holy Family Kirkland will love about St. John Vianney. When you’re done, pin it to the board, so we can see how much love we have to share!

This letter was sent out by the Superintendent of Catholic Schools regarding the Partners in the Gospel initiative:
Good afternoon,
Our new parish families were announced. With their introduction, we have taken another step forward in this process. I believe the gift of Partners in the Gospel is the way that it calls each of us—and each of our schools and parish families—to work toward a common mission while recognizing the unique gifts we each bring to this work. This understanding will allow Partners to take different shapes in various communities, all while renewing a Church where “more young people [are] on fire with the faith, more people [encounter] Christ in the sacraments, more robust outreach ministries [serve] the marginalized, and churches are full every Sunday and Holy Day to give praise and thanks to God.”
As Archbishop Etienne noted in his letter, “the road ahead will have its twists and turns, and may seem long and rugged at times, but the Lord will always be there as our companion and guide.” It is this confidence in Christ’s presence with us throughout this journey that reminds me that while “no [single] program accomplishes the Church's mission [and] no set of goals and objectives includes everything,” Partners in the Gospel provides “an opportunity for the Lord's grace to enter and [complete that which lies beyond our efforts].”
In our (school) communities, we will experience doubt and uncertainty. These are natural expressions in times of change. And though we cannot predict any outcome as we move forward, the gift we can offer our communities is the hope of our faith and the assurance that we will continue to walk together throughout this process.
With gratitude,
NICHOLAS FORD | Superintendent
Office for Catholic Schools | Archdiocese of Seattle
It feels difficult to take a positive attitude regarding something that has been “pushed down upon us,” however, just as we tell our teenagers – you can’t control them, you can only control what you do about it. How we choose to move forward as a parish and as parishioners will define our future. Knowing you, we will do it with a great deal of grace, welcoming, and love.

EUCHARIST
Jesus Christ is in our midst. He is here because he loves us: he wants to remain in us, and he wants us to remain in him. This sacred meal that we share is not just a remembrance of the past. It is not just symbolic. It is a sacred reality. For in this sacrament of his Body and Blood, Jesus is truly present. When we take part in this sacrament, when we say "Amen," we are saying, "yes, we believe that this bread and wine have become the Body and Blood of Christ." But we are also saying yes to our becoming Christ's Body in the world. Because we become what we receive - the Body of Christ. We become members of Christ, and of one another.
DISMISSAL
At the end of Mass, we are sent forth, not because our prayer is over, but because it is only beginning! The Eucharist is the source and summit of our Christian lives. However, its authenticity will be measured not so much by what happens within the walls of the church as by what we do when we leave it. For we who have been welcomed by Christ in this community of faith must reach out to the lonely, the friendless, and the stranger. We who have listened to God's word and sung God's praises must also listen to the cry of God's poor. We who have broken bread together at this altar must lift up those who suffer from hunger and thirst. We who have shared Christ's peace with one another must work for peace in our homes, our workplaces, and our world. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus is with us always. Jesus is still in our midst as one who serves. And in our service of others, we will see his face.

OLIVE WOOD FROM BETHLEHEM
Coming next weekend, February 24-25
| |
We were able to reschedule olive wood sales! The carvings will be available for purchase after all the Masses February 24-25. The proceeds support Christian Catholic families in the Holy Land. This is a major source of income for them. More than 75 families in Bethlehem hand-carved these beautiful and unique items (Nativities, Crucifixes, Rosaries, Statues). The Christian population in Bethlehem has dropped from 22% to less than 2% in the past two decades. And this is a way to support them to stay there. Thank you in advance for your support.
