Vicar Sharai's message
This week is the first Sunday of Lent, and our text is all about forgiveness and sin! Jesus explains what we can do if a member of our community sins against us. He tells us that we should offer correction in private— if they refuse— then with witnesses. Or, as a last resort, with the whole church. If that person refuses to repent after all of that, we should treat them like “a pagan or a tax collector.” That’s a pretty straightforward process, right? But then, Jesus tells a parable about forgiveness and instructs us to forgive, not seven times, but seventy-seven times! We’re supposed to forgive that many times, AND treat people like pagans and tax collectors? I wonder how that works?
Holy Spirit, parables call us to do the work of uncovering Your wisdom. Guide us as we labor, lead us deeper into conversation with You, the Saints, and the whole church. Amen.
