Since I am a cradle catholic from a large Irish Catholic family my family fasted every Sunday before Mass and during Lent. I went to Marquette High School, the Catholic high school in Ottawa, Illinois. I was with a few high school friends last weekend and asked them about fasting requirements when they were younger. Everyone had their own version and only the former altar boys had the same fasting memories. We all agreed the fasting rules were stricter in the Sixties and Seventies. It did make for some interesting dinner conversation.
Ash Wednesday is tomorrow, and my fasting begins. A time to pray more, give more, eat less, give up the things that are not necessary in life and reflect on the remarkable life Jesus lived.
